חפזון m. (b. h.; preced.) haste, being hurried. Ber. 9a (ref. to Ex. XII, 11) ח׳ שעת עד (which means, you may eat of the Passover lamb) up to the time of leaving in haste. Ib. וכ׳ ח׳ שעת על (they differ) as to the time of hippazon; R. El. saying דמצרים ח׳ hipp. refers to the hastening of the Egyptians (ib. 30, sq., at night), while R. Ak. refers it tto דישראל ח׳ the haste of the Israelites (in the morning, Num. XXXIII, 3); Mekh. Bo, s. 7חפזו זה מצרים this (Ex. XII, 11) refers to &c. Ib. שכינה ח׳ the haste (anxiety) of the Deity. Sifre Deut. 130 (ref. to Deut. XVI, 3) ולמצרים לישראל ח׳ יכול you might think, there was anxiety (fear) on the part of lIsrael and of Egypt. Pes. IX, 5. Ib. 96a וכ׳ בח׳ נאכל אותו this was eaten in haste, but no other &c. -- Ex. R. s. I9; a. e.

חפי, חפה (b. h.; cmp. חפף I) 1) to cover, spread over. Hull. III, 7 וכ׳ חופין וכנפיו and whose wings cover the largest portion of its body. Sot. IX, 15 (49a) וחפו ראשם and covered their heads (in shame). -- Part. pass. חפוי. Esth. R. to VI, 12 וכ׳ ראש וחפוי and his head cover- ed (in shame) over what had happened to him; Meg. 16a. --- 2) to bend, curve. Yoma 47a וכ׳ שלש חופה he bends three of his fingers (grasping with them) up to &c.; cmp. חפן. Pi. חיפה ) to cover, strew over. Tosef. Kil. I, 15 המחפה who covers up (mixed seeds with earth); M. Kat. 2b; Macc. 21b. Ib. החופה ed. (Mk M. המח׳). Y. Kil. VII, 31b במחפה לא is it not because in plowing over he covers the seeds up? Shebi. IV, 5 בעפר יחפהסו לא he must not cover it (the cut) with loose ground, opp. to (כסה) covering with stones. Y. Taan. II, beg. 65a חיסו אבותינו וכ׳ חיפינ . .. our ancestors covered it (the reader's desk) with gold, and we with dust. Nidd. 16a וכ׳ ותיסנה and semen virile may have covered it up; a. e. --- 2) to cover over, to protect from justice, to be partiol. Shebu. 39a עליו שמחפין מפני because they (the publican's or robber's relations) protect him. Ex. R. s. 30 אותו מחפין היו tried to protect him; a. e. -- 3) (cmmp. גבב) [o heap uup words,] to invent fictions (v. II Kings XVII, 9). Gen. R. s. 94. (play on חפים, ib. XLVI, 21) וכ׳ דברים עליו שחיפו about whom they invented a fiction (Gen. XXXVII, 3).

חפיא I m. (preced.) 1) cover, overlaying. - Pl. חפיי. Targ. Y. Num. XVII, 3, sq.; v. חופאה. -- 2) (adj.; cmp. חוס) bending over, concerned. Koh. R. to I, 3 ח׳ לגרמיה הוא (some ed. חפיה) he is concerned about himself (his honor, because he has not been invited.)
חפיא II m. (v. חפף II a. חוף I; cmp. יחף) barefooted (in mourning). Gen. R. s. 100 ח׳ נפיק (some ed. חפי) went out barefooted, opp. סנדלוי לביש.

חפינה f. (חפן) the priest's taking handfuls of in- cense (Lev. XVI, 12). Yoma 19a top ח׳ ללמדו (they took him to the house of Abtinas) to teach him the ma- nipulation of hfinah. Ib. ח׳ וגמר and he learned hdf.. Ib. 49a בחפינתו with what the dying highpriest had seised with his hands. Men. 11a ח׳ והאיכא is there not hefinah ammmong the difficult priesily functions?; a. e.
חפיסה f. (חפס to collect, cmp. Arab. hafas, a. hafs) a small leather bag, valise (for documents &c.). B. Mets. I, 8, expl. ib. 20b קטנה חמת; Gitt. III, 3;ib. 28a. Yoma 75b בח׳ שמונח כמו Ms. M.
