חפיתא f. (v. חף) fish remaining on the shore after the water receded, mut fish. Cant. R. to I, 4 (ref. to תדון דאבה, Job XLI, 14, cmp. דאב) ח׳ כהדא מקרטעא jumping like raked fish. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 42a חפיתה; cmp. חיפושא.
חפן [to bend the fingers, form a hollow of the hand, denom. חופן; whence to take handfuls. Maas. Sh. II, 5 וכ׳ וח׳ בלל אם if he mixed the coins up and took by handfuls, you go by the proportion of the coins mixed. Y. ib. 53c וחופן כבולל it is as in the case of him who &c. -- Esp. (of the priest) to take grabs of incense with both hands (v. חפינה). Yoma V, 1. Ib. 47a וכ׳ חופן היה used to grab &c.; a. fr. Nif. נחפן to be grabbed. Y. Maas. Sh. l. c. הנבללין והנחפנין the coins which were mixed up and then collect- ed by handfuls.
חפן ch. same. Yoma 47b (ref. to Lev. XVI, 12) אינשי כדחפני as people usually grab. Gen. R. s. 5 ההוא וכ׳ תרי דח׳ he who takes a grab takes twice as much as he who flls his fist, v. קמן; Yalk. Josh. 14.
חפן, חופן m. (b. h.; preced. wds.) the hollow of the hand formed by bending the fingers so as to touch the wrist, contrad. to קמין; a handful. Gen. R. s. 5 חפנו משה של the quantity of a handful of Moses hand. Ex. R. s. 11 וכ׳ ח׳ מלא שלו ח׳ מלא his (Moses) handful and that of Aaron; a. fr. -- Du. חפנים, חופנים. Yoma V, 1 מלא חפניו his two handfuls. Ib. 47a חופניו. Ex. R. l. c. לקחו חפניהם . . . both of them took, each his handfuls; a. fr. [Tosef. B. Mets. IX, 14 חפן ed., read ספן as ed. Zuck.].

חפף I (b. h.; cmp. גבב, כפף) to bend over, to cover; trnsf. to be anxious, to care. Meg. 26a; Zeb. 53b sq. וכ׳ חופף שנ׳ . . מצטער . .. . והיה Benjamin took pains . . . to conquer it, as it says (Deut. XXXIII, 12) he (Ben- jamin) is bent over it &c. [Rashi; rubs his head, v. חפף II.]

חפף II (cmp. חפס) to scrape, rub, esp. to cleanse one's head, rub, comb. Sabb. 31a וכ׳ חופא הלל והיה Ms. M. (ed. חפף והלל) and Hillel was washing his head. Naz. VI, 3 וכ׳ חופף נזיר a Nazir may wash (rub with his hand) his hair. Ib. באדמה יחוף לא he must not use an earth, v. נשר. Yalk. Gen. 150 (play on חפים, Gen. XLVI, 21) לא וכ׳ חפפתי I did not wash (my head) or comb. Tosef. Ter. X, 4 וכ׳ שחיפת ed. Zuck. which a priest's daughter has used for washing her hair; ib. Maas. Sh. II. 1שחפה.

חפץ m. (b. h.; preced.) 1) thing (held in hand), ob- ject. B. Mets. IV, 10 זה ח׳ בכמה how much is this worth? Cant. R. to I, 4 טוב ח׳ כל any good thing; a. fr.. -- 2) concern, business; desire, desirable obect. Ib.; Pesik. Sos, p. 147a אין ממך טוב ח לי I have nothing more desirable than thy- self. Koh. R. to V, 7 חפצו נעשה his desire was fulfilled. Num. R. s. 19 וכ׳ חפצי מן תחזירני אל do not turn me of from (refuse) my desire which &c.; a. fr. -- Pl. חפצים. M. Kat. 9b (ref. to Prov. III, 15, a. חפצא ch. same, esp. a sacred object held in hand at the delivery of an oath. Shebu. 38b ח׳ לאתפושי צריך בידיה the judge must make him hold an object (Torah) in his hand.
