scalcs, weighing. Pesik. B'shall. p. 82a וכ׳ דאכרעון בא׳ in

אכשרותא f. (כשר) propriety, proper use. Targ. Koh. X, 10.
אכתי (contr. of הי כענתא אד) a scholastic term in Talm. Bab., still, even now, yet. Meg. 2a וכ׳ ליה מבעי וא׳ and still the plural form is needed. Yoma 27a; a. fr. - מדאכתי since, up to that time. R. H.sh. 10b.
*אכתנא m. (אכת, v. P. Sm. 191; cmp. אכסא, עכס, עכסה, עכן) venomous, vindictive. Targ. Prov. XII, 28 Ms. Luzz. (v. Pesh., a. LXX b. c.); [some ed. אבהתנא, v. בהת; עותנא; h. text וכ׳ אל נתיבה]
*אכתר m. (v. preced.; ר format., cmp. סמוקר) greenish, blighted. Y. Dem. II, beg. 22b is there no rice in Hulla? הוא א׳ it is greenish.
*אכתריאל m. (כתר) [divine crown], pr. n. Akhtriel, a divine surname (attribute). Ber. 7a.
א״ל, אלב״ם Albam, a formula of permutation of letters wherein the first interchanges with the twelfth, the second with the thirteenth, &c. Num. R. s. 18 טבאל רמלא באלב״ם Tubel in Albam reads Ramla. Sabb. 104a.
אל־ a prefix, =על; e. g. אלתוסבראות (=האוצרות על) appointed over treasures, v. אי.
אל (b. h.) not, no (according to Talmud a milder form of prohibilion than לאא; v. Y. Pes. VI, 33b). Aboth I, 3. -- תקרי אל (abbr. א״ת), v. אלא. Taan. 11a וכ׳ יראה א׳ shall not live to see &c.; a. v. fr.
אל (h. h.; אול to turn) prep. to, toward. - Pl., with prefix מ a. suffix of pers. pron., of itself, of my (his cc.) own accord, on my (his cc.) authority. Yoma 5b מאלי לא not on my own authority. Orlah I, 2 מאליו העולה grow- ing spontane sly. - Y. Peah VII, 20b bot. its sacred character למדו מאליו they did derive from itself (i. e. from the wording of the law itself). -- Hence ממילא, v. מילא.

אלא (אלא) (contr. of לא לא=אן אם) 1) if not, ex- cept, but, only. Tamm g. O. Ex. XV, 11 את א׳ לית none but thou, none besides thee; a. e. - Ber. V, 1וכ׳ א׳. . . . עומדין אאין one must stand up for prayer in no other disposition but that of humility. -- Snh 4a שלשה א׳ נתן לא he did only three times. Ber. I 1וכ׳ א׳ (אמרו) בלבד זו ולא and not only in this case they sald so, but wherever &c. אלבינא, אלבינה (אלב to cut; cmp. חלף, חילף, חילפא &c.) a bundle of shoots, broom. Y. Meg. II, 73a (for b. h. מטאטא).
אלבנא m. (v. preced.) young shoot of the palm-tree, thin pointed branch. Pl. אלבנין, אלבנייא. Cant. R. to VII, 9 the palm . . . has no less אלבנין אילנין תלת מן (strik e out אילנין) than three nnew (cutting) shoots. Ib. in our place they call סנסנייה לאלבנייא the young shoots saus'naya (h. סנסנים).
