סקר II (b. h. שקר) [to blink, shine; denom. סיקרא] 1) to look, gaze. Y. Nidd. III, 50c bot. כאדם לפניהן סוקרין they look forward (have their eyes in front of the head) like human beings (v. Bab. ib. 23a). -- 2) (denom. of סיקרא) to paint red, mark with sikra. Bekh. IX, 7 (58b) היוצא בסיקרא סוקרו (Talm. ed. סוקר) he marks every tenth lamb that goes forth; ib. וכ׳ סקרו לא (Talm. ed. סוקרו) if he failed to mark it. Sabb. 67a בסיקרא סוקרו (v. Rabb. D. סקרנית f. (סקר II) looking around, coquettish. Gen. R. s. 18 Eve was not made of Adam's eye ס׳ תהא שלא (Ar. סו׳) that she might not be a coquette; ס היא והרי and yet she (woman) is coquettish; Yalk. ib. 24 (not נות. .., ניות. .); Yalk. Is. 265; Tanh. Vayesh. 6.
סקררין m. (sacrarium) shrine in a temple or in a house. Gen. R. s. 89 בס׳וכ׳ שכמוכתב (ed. סקרידין, סקרירין) for thus is it recorded in the aerarium of the Pharaoh that a lave cannot obtain an office &c. (v. Sm. Ant. s. V. Aerarium); Yalk. ib. 147 שלהם בסיקררין; (Tanb. Mick. 3 בספריו).
סקרתא f. (v. סקר II) red paint. Gitt. 19a (expl. סיקרא) שמה ס׳ its name is s'karta. -- Esp. marking with sikra. Bekh. 58a ס׳ משום... . אפשר אי you cannot tithe sheep on the Holy Day on account of the required marking with paint; ag. 8a. Naz. 39a וכ׳ מס׳ שמע תא come, learn it (that the hair grows from the root) from the mark on sheep, where you can see that the wool beneath is loose (while that on top is matted).
סר = עסר, ten, v. חדסר.
סר m. (b. h. סר, sub רוח; סור) one whom courage has left, lom-spirited (v. I Kings XXI, 5). Ex. R. s. 2 (ref. to סר, Ex. III, 4) וכ׳ זה הוא וזעף סר low-spirited and indig- nant is this man, seeing the trouble &c.

סרב, Pi. סירב (Saf. of רב) 1) to assume importance, to allow one's self to be coaxed; to decline an office. Pes. 86b וכ׳ לקטן מסרבין you may decline an offer from an in- ferior person than yourself, but not &c. Ber. 4aa . העובר לסרב צריך he who is asked to say the prayers, must first decline (wait to be asked again); וכ׳ מסרב אינו ואם and if he does not decline, he is like a dish without salt; ואם וכ׳ מדאי יותר מסרב but if he allows himself to be coaxed more than proper &c. Ib. וכ׳ יסרב ראשונה פעם when ask-- ed for the first time, he must decline, the second time &c., v. הבהב; Y. ib. V, 9c bot. וכ׳ מסרב בתחלה. --- 2) (with ב; v. סרהב) [to be mperious,] to press, uזge. Y. Dem. IV, 24a bot. וכ יסרב לא one must not urge his neighbor to be his guest, when he knows that he will not accept; Tosef. B. Kam. VII, 8 וכ׳ בחבירו המסרב he who urges his neighbor to be his guest, when in his heart he does not mean to invite him; Y. Ab. Zar. I, 39c bot.; Tosef. B. Bath. VI, 14; Treat. Der. Er. ch. VIII; (Hull. 94a יסרהב). Tosef. Ned. IV, 8a; Ned. 21; a. e. -- 3) (== מרה) to rebel. Koh. R. to I, 16 הלב וכ׳ מסרב the heart is rebellious, as we read (Jer. V, 23). Midr, Till. to Ps. V, 11 (expl. מרו, ib.) כנגדך שסרבו ed. Buub. (oth. ed. שרבו, corr. acc.) they rebelled against thee; Yalk. ib. 632; a. e.
