עמוקm. עמוקהf. (b. h. עמק; עמק)deep, low; (of color) light-shaded (which in the perspective looks lower, while the darker shade appears to protrude). Sifra Thazr., Neg..,. ch. Iהצל מן עמוקים שהם החמה כמראה עמוקה עמוק לשון ממה what does deep (Lev. XIII, 2, sq.) mean? A depression, like the sun-lit spots (in a painting &c.), which have the semblance of being deeper than the shaded spots (which appear tto be raised); Hull. 63a הצל מן העמוקה חמה כמראה; Tosef. Neg. עמי, 2מה (cmp. עמם) to be darh, dim, faint. Tanh. Yithro 13 וכהה ע׳ קולו the sound he produces becomes fainter and duller (the longer he blows); Yalk. Ex. 284. ע׳ קולו, opp. מגביה. Hif. העמה to become fatnt. Tanb. Haaiz. 7 (play on גמי בן עמיאל, Num. XIII, 12) וכ׳ וגמל . . . כחו העמה his strength failed him, because he said . . . , and he brought it upon himself that he did not enter Palestine.
