II, 77c top (ref. to Ps. XX XI, 19 עתק . . . הדוברות) עולם של צדיקו על הדוברות מבריותיו שה׳ דברים who speak concerning the Righteous One of the world words which he has withheld from his creatures (esoteric philosophy); Yalk. Ps. 715; Gen. R. s. 1 בבריותיו שה׳ (corr. acc., v. lRash' a. l.). Ruth R. to I, 1 (ref. to I Chr. IV, 22) עולם של ממעתיקו נאמרו הללו דברים וכ׳ these words were spoken by Him who moves the world (by ref. to ויעתק, Gen. XII, 8); (Yalk. Chr. 1074 מעתיקו הללו דברים, v. עתיק). Yalk. Prov. 961 (ref. to העתיקו, Prov. XXV, 1) היו שגנוזים מלמד העתיקו ׳Zi'etiku' (they removed), this shows that they were suppressed (v. גנז). Ib. וכ׳ פירשו אלא העתיקו אין אחר דבר another interpretation is, hetiku means they set aside' (ref. tto Gen. XII, 8), i. e. translated, interpreted (v. פרש, a. cmp. the later use of העתיק to edit, to translate); Ab. d'R. N. ch. I, 2a Vers. (ed. Schechter, p. 3) שפרשו אלא העתיקו אין; ib. 1a Vers. שפירשו אלא שהמתינו לא, v. next w. Hof. הועתק to be removed. Koh. R. to I, 8 (in enigmatic speech) מחיה להחיש לכאן הועתקתי ואני and Ihave come here to accelerate the growth (of hair). Nif. נעתק, Nithpa. נתעתק to be removed, transferred. Esth. R. to I, 1 הנעתקין, v. קינסין. Yalk. Chr. 1076 (ref. to IChr. l. c.) החזירם מהם שנתגתקסו . . . אפי׳ even things which had been removed from them (esoteric thoughts) did he bring back; Ruth R. l. c. (not שנתעסקו).
עתק II to be substantial, strong; (cmp. ישיש) to be old. -- Denom. עתיק. Hif. העתיק (denom. of עתיק; cmp. זקן Nithpa.) to be long in deliberating, mature. Ab. d'R. N. ch. I (expl. העתיקו, Prov. XXV, 1) שהמתינו אלא שהעתיקו ולא and H'etiku means, which they considered maturely'; שאול אאבא שפירשו אלא שהמתינו לא אומר Abba S. says, it does not mean which they considered maturely', but which they set aside', v. preced. ) Ie, tthe seventeenth etter of the Alphabet. It inter- changes with ב, ו, and כ; v. letter ב. פ׳, as numeral letter, eighty, v. א׳.

עתר m. (עתר, v. עתירה) shovel or pitchfork. Tosef. IIkts. I, 5 בע׳ שהופכה מפני because he is used to turn it up with the shovel; Succ. 14a בע׳ להופכן שראויות מפני. Ib.; Yeb. 64a וכ׳ מהפך זה ע׳ מה כע׳ . . . למה why is the prayer of the righteous symbolized by a shovel (the root עתר being used for praying, v. עתירה II)? As the shovel turns the grain from place to place, so the prayer of the righteous turns the dispensations of the Lord from anger to mercy; Num. R. s. 10 (with ref. to ויעתר, lud. XIII, 8).

פאה, פי׳ f. (b. h.; פאה to split, divide; v. Ges. H. Dict,aVa s. v.) section, segment, corner. - Pl. פאות, פי׳. Erub. 51a (ref. to Num. XXXV, 5) כתיבן פ׳ the text speaks of corners (angular additions); ib. אתה אין פ׳ נותן אתה לזה וכ׳ פ׳ נותן for this purpose (the definition of suburbs) you allow corners to be included (G. e. square measurements), but you must not allow corners to those appointing a Sabbath center (שביתה), i. e. you must allow them to walk only within a circle the radius of which is two thousand cubits.
