פלאי (b. h.) pr. n. Peli (unknown). Num. R. s. 10 (ref. to Jud. XIII, 18) וכ׳ ׳ המלאך שמו שם there (on that occasion) his name was 'the angel Pelf', corresponding to his mission, as he came to recommend a vow of ab- stinence (with ref. to יפלא, Num. VI, 2).
פלאתא f. (פלא) dark saying, allegory. Targ. Prov. I, 6 (h. text מליצה).
*פלבל (prob. to be read; פלפל, v. פלפל II) to roll. Tanh. ed. Bub. Huick. 3 מפלבלות עיניה ראו they saw the eyes of the cow roll (squint to look at the yoke, v. פזל). Ib. עיניה מפלבלות . . באין כשהן (prob. to be read; היתה מפלבלת) when they came to put a yoke on her, she rolled her eyes.
פלג (b. h.) to separate, split. Hif. הפליג 1) to partt, go awag. Y. Ber. I, 2d bot. ומצאו ה׳ הוא אף שה׳ (not עוד) and finding that he (the friend that had knocked at the door) had withdrawn, he with- drew liikewise. -Esp. to o to sea (cmp. פילגוס). Erub. IV, 1 בים ספינתם הפליגה their ship went out on the open sea. Sabb. 19a וכ׳ בספינה מפליגין אין you must not start on a. sea-voyage less than three days before the Sabbath; Num. R. s. 16, beg. הגדול בים בספינה מפליגין אין (contrad. to שרש along the sea coast). -2) ממלאכה ה׳ (or sub. ממלאכה) to restt from work; to pause. Lev. R. s. 30 לכשיפליג, v. לקש. Tosef. Ber. IV, 21 וכ׳ צריכין הפליגו (not צריך) when the laborers take a recess, they must say the benediction for what they have been eating while at work. Y. Yoma III, 40b bot. להפליג, v. הפלג. - 3) to divert, putt of; to discard. Bab. ib. 66b וכ׳ בדברים שהפליגן מפני לא (he made an evasive reply) not because he desired to divert their minds with words (counterquestions), but because he never said anything that he had not heard from his teacher; Tosef. Yeb. III, 4; Succ. 27b. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 40c bot. וכ׳ שה׳ כשם יפליגיו . . שאלו אם if he asks him wwhither he is going, let him put him off (state a distant destination), as did Jacob to Esau; Tosef. ib. III, 4מפליג. Tosef. Gitt. VII (V), 8 זה נתכוון לא . . אפשר שאי תנאי כל להפליגה אלא whenever an impossibility is made the con- dition of a letter of divorce, he (the husband) has had only the intention to divert her mind; Y. B. Mets. VII, end, 11c (corr. acc.). Y. Ber. IX, end, 14a דעתו שה׳ כיון ממנה when he turns his attentions from her (makes her feel that he does not intend to marry her). Gen. R. s. 1V ממנו והפליבה . . . ראה when he saw her full of mucus and blood, he kept her away from him; a. fr. -- 4) to rcjedt, disregard, discard. Pesik. R. s. 31 . .. פושעת היתה גזירותיו את ומפלגת she was careless about his honor andi disregarded his decrees. Ib. s. 3 [read;] הוא . . . זמן כל וכ׳ מפליג as long as his teacher is alive, he (the puil) is careless, (saying) whenever it be needed, here is my teacher &c. Ab. IV, 3 דבר לכל מפליג תהי אל discard nothing (saying, this will never happen). Gen. R. s. 8 של דרכן ה׳ וכ׳ רשעים he removed the way of the wicked out of his sight (disregarded the evil doings of the future man); Midr. Till. to Ps. I ed. Bub. (oth. ed. פפילג Pi.); a. e. -- 5) to decline fromm the road. Gen. R. s. 48 רואה אני אם וכ׳ דרכם את שהפליגו אותן when I see that they wend. their way hither &c.; שהפליגו אותם שראה וכיון and when he saw that they were declining; Yalk. ib. 82. -- Trnsf. to be mistakemn. R. to XI, 9 חפליג אאל הורה בדברי עצמך do not go thy own way in the inter- pretation of the Law (cling to tradition). - 6) עצמו ה׳ [to withdraw one's sel~] to be reserved, speak in indefinite and general terms, opp. עצמו פרסם to reveal one's self, speak in definite terms. Midr. Sam. ch. XIV (ref. to I am. IX, 15, sq.) מפליג הקב'ה הקץ הגיע שלא עד אלא לא לשעבר עצמו מפרסם ... עצמו did the Lord never before reveal any- thing to Samuel? But before the proper time has come, the Lord speaks reservedly, when the timme has come, he reveals himself clearly (to-morrow &c.) - 7) to differ. Yalk.
