צמיד m. (b. h.; צמד) [closely,joined,] 1) exactly fitting lid. פתיל צ׳, v. פתיל. Snh. 64a (ref. to הנצמדים, Num. XXV, 5, in contrast to הדבקים, Deut. IV, 4) פ׳ כצ׳ . . . הנצמדים who were attached to Baal P eor like an air-tight lid, whereas they were attached to the Lord' merely as two dates sticking tto each other; Yalk. Num. 71 . -- 2) joined, yoked. Num. R. s. 20 (ref. to ויצמד, Num. XXV, 3) כאדם במלאכתו צ׳ like a man yoked (inseparably attached) to his work. - 3) wrist-band, bracelet. Snb. l. c. . .. הנצמדים וכ׳ אשה ידי על כצ׳ who were attached tto Baal Peor',. means mmerely as a bracslet on the hands of a wormrn, whereas &c., v. דבק; a. e. -- Pl. צמידים. Num. R. l. c. בצ׳ ידיה על ike the bracelets on her hands' (Gen. XXIV, 22). Ib. בצ׳ ויצמד ... קשה גזירה זו this was a greater calamity than that of the golden calf, for thereitissaid(Ex..XXXII,2), 'take off the golden rings', but here, and Israel was tied' (Num. l. c.) with wristbands. Yalk. Gen. 109; a. e. -- 4) couple. -- P. as ab. Num. R.l. c. (ref. to ויצמד, v. supra) וכ׳ זוגות צ׳ צ׳ . בתהלה at frst they went (into the house of prostitution) secretly, but then they went in jointly, pair-wise, as we speak of בקר צמד (a pair of oxen); Tan. Bal. 18.

צמייא, צ׳קייטא f. (מיp [shrunk by the summer, ו] name of a kind of early figs. Y. Maasr. I, 49a top משיבכר ק׳ צ׳ when the first tsamya kayta ripens; ק׳ צ׳ ביכר לא וכ׳ iff in that year the ts. k. did not ripen early &c.
צמירתא f. (צמר) 1) hot; צ׳ אשתא inflammatory fever, v. אשא. Pes. 25b. Ab. Zar. 28a; a. e. -- 2) stone in the bladder or kidneys. B. Mets. 85a (Ms. R. 1 צימרתא; AMg. Hatt. צמדתא). Gitt. 69b (Rashi צמרתא).
צמית m. (צמת, v. צמיתות) irredeemably sold, forfeited. Y. Maasr. III, 50d ביובל צ׳ ואין (prob. to be read; נצמת, v. צמת) and does not become irredeemable in the jubilee year (Succ. 3b נחלט ואינו). Arakh. 31b, v. צמיתות.
*צמיתא m. (צמת) gathering together, summons. Targ. Y. Gen. XXV, 14 (transl. of משמע, pr. n. pl., cmp. וישמע ISam. XV, 4); v. צייתא.
צמיתות f. (b. h. צמיתת; צמת) irredeemable sale; לצ׳ absolutely, finally. Arakh. 31b (ref. to Lev. XXV, 30) לצ׳ לחלוטין latsts'mithuth means absolutely; המתנה . . . לצ׳ דא צ׳ צמית מיט another interpretation; latsts'mithuth is an amplification serving to include a gift (to be final if not. redeemed within a year); why ? Because צמית would have sufficed to indicate a final sale, and ts'mithuttht amplifies the scope of the law.
צמל m. (cmp. צמצם) [contraction, wrinkle,] the last stage in the growth of the fig; trnsf. the stage of complete puberty of woman, v. בוחל. Nidd. V, 7. Ib. 47a (phonetic etymmology) מלאה תה דbכמ as one says, it has come forth complete. Ibb מלמעלה צ׳ the symptom of complete puberty on the upper part of the body.
צמם to be pressed together, be restrained. Hif. הצם to restrain; to tie up. Cant. R. to IV, 1 (ref. to צצמתך, ib.) וכ׳ שערה כשמצמת הזאת האשה as a woman ties up her hair behind, and this is an ornament to her, so the Great Sanhedrin sat behind the Temple &c.

צמצם (Pilp. of צמם) 1) to contract; to press, squeeze in, force into close confinement. Snh. 76b המצמצם את לרבות this includes him who caused the death of a person by forcing him into a place whence he could not escape. Ib, 77a מצצמצם . . . בנוקין in cases of damages the Law does not condemn him who causes damage through con- finement (e. g. by placing an animal where it was exposed to sunstroke). Pesik. Bahod., p. 152a ביניהם שכינתו מצמצם forces his Divine Presence into their midst; ib. Vayhi, p. 5a. Gen. R. s. 5; Lev. R. s. 10 וכ׳ בין יממן he crowded them (the priests) between the ttwo bars of the Ark (cmp. מד); a. e. - Part. pass. מומצצם; f מצומצמת; pl. מצומצמין; מצומצמות. Ib. s. 11 (in Chald. dict.) מצ׳ חמיתיה אנא ביניהון I saw it (the Divine Presence) confined in the midst of them (the elders); Yalk. Prov. 964. Lev. R. s. 14. וכ׳ בו מ איבריו ושאר and the rest of its (the embryo's) limbs are pressed togetther like a shapeless lump;(Y. Nidddd. III, 50a מצומתים), v. גולם. -- 2) to press against, hide behind. Pesiik. Sos, p. 147b (ref. to Is. LXI, 10 ככלה) היו . . . כיון וכ׳ עצמן ממצמין when the Israelites stood at Mount Sinai they pressed themselvest(against one another,iin reverence) like a bride (when she undresses), opening one (part of her garment) and holding together another part. Cant. R. to IV, 10 the Ten Commandments עליהן מצמצמים שהיו ככלה (sub. עצמן) at receiving which they hid tthemselves like a bride. Gen. R. s. 45 end פניה וצימצמה . . והיתה וכ׳ she leaned on her maid and pressed her face (against her), so that the king could not see her &c.; Yalk. ib. S0. Cant. R. to VI, 5 העמוד אחורי פניה וצמצמה הלכה she wenth. and pressed her face (hid herself) behind a column; a. e. -- 3) [o press the eye] to observe closely; to define eexaettly. Bekh. II, 6 (17a) לצמצם אפשר אי (Mish. ed. אפשר אי only) it is impossible to ascertain exactly (that both heads came forth simultaneously). Ib. 17b שמים בידי לש׳ אפשר it is possible to ascertain simultaneity in natural processes; אדם בידי לצ׳ אaא it is impossible to ascertain simultaneity in human actions. Shebu. 32a (ref. to כאחת שניהן כפרו, Mish. IV, 4) לצ׳ איפשר אי הא but is it not impossible to ascertain simultaneity (of evidence of ttwo witnesses)?
