שגרונא, שי׳ m. (שגר I, 2) dragging or casting the
legs, hip-disease. Hull. 51a נקטיה ש׳ האי. . אימרתא ההיא
(Ms. M. שיגדונא, Ar. שגד׳, v. Rabb. D. S. a.l. note) there was
a case of lambs... that dragged their hind legs (v. שגר I),
said R. Yemar, that is a case (of which, when occurring
with a man, we say) hip-disease has seized him' (which
does not rise from a severance of the spinal cord). Ib.
וכ חוט שכיח ש׳ hip-disease is a frequent disorder, sever-
ance of the spinal cord is unusual. Gitt. 69b וכ׳ לש׳ as a.
remedy for hip-disease, let one take &c.
שגרונייה m. pl. (שגר I) [rivulets,] slopes. Y. Bicc. I, end, 64b מינהן דבישן ש׳ אילין דמקדר מאן he who meas- ures (v. קדר I) the slopes of Beshan (will find that) they are part of them (of the regions flowing with milk and honey).
שגריר m. (שגר) messenger, ambassador. Y. Shebu. I, 32a וכ׳ זה של ושברירו.. . מלכו שגריריהן ושני מלכים לשני as in the case of two kings and their two ambassadorrs, this one's king being higher in rank than the other's king, and this iking's ambassador higher than the other king's ambassador, but this one's ambassador is not higher than the other ambassador's king. --- Pl, שגרירים, v. supra.
שגש I (apocop. of שגשג, transpos. of גשגש, v. גשש; cmp. געגע, a. כסך, כסכס) to feel around, dabble, famble. Tanh. P'kude3 וכ׳ שוגש שהוא לחזיר דומה שני עולם in the second period man is like tre swine that searches in the dunghills; so does the child ttwo years old dabble in dirt.
שגש II, Pi. שגש (v. שגשג) to confuse. Yalk. Gen. 150 pplay on והשגתם a. ישיגם, Gen. XLIV, 4, 6) כתיב בשוין (וכ בדברים אותם שגש it is written with (may be read as) Shin, confuse them with words, now soft and now hard; וכ׳ שגש וישיגם עשה וכך and so did he, vayasshigemm, he confused them &c.

Pa. שגש to debase. Lev. R. l. c. וכ׳ אורחא שגישתון you debased your manners, as it is written (Prov. l. c.), an earthen vessel' &c. - B. שגשג (Palp. of שגג) to confuse, perplex. thpalp. אשתגשג to be confused, excited; to rage. Targ. Jer. XXV, 16 Ms. (ed. וישתגשון).
שגשיא, שגיש׳ f. (שגש) excited, agitated. Gen. R. s. 87, beg. (expl. וכ׳ המיה, Prov. VII, 11) וטעיא ש׳ (Ar. בייכא; Yalk. ib. 14 5, a. Yalk. Prov. 940 בוכה, read; ביכה) she is agitated and runs about; v. בוך.
שד m. (שדד) furrow. - Pl. שדים, שיד׳. Gen. R. s. 42 (expl. השדים עמק, Gen. XIV, 10) תלמים ש׳ ש׳ עשוי שהוא וכ׳ אחר דבר (the valley was called Siddim,) because it was made up into siddim, (which means) furrows; another explanation (as if שדים), because it fed its children like breasts; Yalk. ib. 72 (corr. acc.).
שד m. (b. h.; שדה, v. Ges. Thes. s. v.) female breast. Toset. Sot. IV, 3 (ref. to לשד, Num. XI, 8) וכ׳ עיקר זה שד מה ed. Zuck. (Var. דד) as the breast is essential for the child and everything else is of secondary import, so was the manna &c.; וכ׳ יונק אם זה שד מה as the breast does not harm the child, even if it suck it an entire day &c.; Yoma 75a וכ׳ תינוק זה שד מה as the child finds in the breast all tastes &c. - u. שדים; pl. constr. שדי. Gen. R. s. 42; Yalk. ib. 72, v. preced. Tanh. Sh'moth 25 והיונקים אמם משדי כחלב and the sucklings found in the manna a. taste like that of the milk from their mothers breast (ref. to Num. l. c.). שד, שיד m. (b. h.) demon. Yoma 75a (play on לשד, Num. XI, 8) וכ׳ מתהפך זה שד מה as the demon changes into many colors (appearances), so did the manna change into many tastes. Snh. 67b שד אמנא דקפיד, v. קפד. Ib. (ref. to Ex. VIII, 15) וכ׳ השד שאין מיכן from here we learn that the conjured demon cannot create anything smaller than a barley corn; a. fr. -- Pl. שדים, שדין, שי׳. Lev. R. s. 22 (ref. to Lev. XVII, 7) ש׳ אלא . . . ואין this s'irim means demons; שעירים. . . ששש׳ ואין and this shedimm (Deut. XXXII, 17) means sbirim (ref. to Is. XIII, 21).
