שוט I, מישוט ש׳ pr. n. pl. ShotgMishot, Samosata, one of the fords of the Euphrates (v. Neub. Geogr. p. 33, a. Sm. Dict. of Gr. a. Rom. Geogr. s. vv. Euphrates). Kidd. 72a וכ׳ בין מ׳ ש׳ Samosata is situated between the rivers (Euphrates and Tigris).
שוט II m. (b. h.; שוט I) rod, scourge. Mekh. B'shall, Amalek, s. 2 וכ׳ לוקין שישראל ש׳. . . מדה כך such is the rule going through all generations, the scourge (nation) wwith which the Israelites are smitten, will finally be smitten; Yalk. Ex. 265.

שוטה m. (שטה) madman, fool; (of plants) wild. Hull. I, 1, a. fr. וקטן ש׳ חרש a deaf and dumb person, an insane person, and a minor. Y. Ter. I, 40b וכ׳ שש׳ ססימני the symp- toms of insanity. Tosef. Ter. I, 3 ש׳ פעמים, v. חלם I. Yoma VIII, 6 ש׳ כלב a mad dog. Ab. IV, 7 וכ׳ רשע ש׳ is a fool, a wicked man &c. Sot. III, 4 ש׳ חסיד a foolish saint; ib. 21b וכ׳ ש׳ חסיד דמי היבי what is meant by a foolish saint?
