שטות f. (שטה) madness; folly. Num. R. s. 96 (ref. to Nuum. V, 12) ש׳ רוח בה שיכנס עד... בשין כתיב תשטה תשטה (not הש׳ בה. . .) it is written with Shin so that you may read thishteh, to intimate that a woman will not go astray, unless the spirit of insanity has entered into her; Sot. 3a ש׳ רוח עבירה עובר אדם אין no man sins unless &c. Midr. Till. to Ps. IX, v. מורא II. Y. Naz. IX, 57a . . . אאדיין בשטותו עומד Bar P. still insists upon his foolish opinion. Bekh. 5b (play on שטים, Num. שטי, שטה (cmp. סטה) [to go astray,] to be dement- ed, foolish. V. שוטה. Nif. נשטה, Hithpa. השתטה, Nithpa. נשטהה 1) to become demented. Tosef. B.Kam. IV, 4 בעליו שנישטו ed. Zuck. (Var. שנשתטו) whose owner became insane; B. Kam. 39b. Yeb. XIV, 1 וכ׳ נשתטית if the wife becomes insane, he can- not divorce her; וכ׳ נ׳ if he becomes insane, he can never divorce her; a. fr. -- 2) to be mad; to rage, be impassioned. Num. R. s. 20e וכ׳ אחריה נשטה היה he was mad with passion for her, as we read (Hos. IV, 11) &c.; Tanh. Balak 18 וכ׳ מששטתה היו (read; משתטה היה; ed. Bub. 25 נששטה).
