תמד m. (עמד, v. עמידא; cmp. תמיד) husks and stalks of (pressed) grapes, steeped in water, used as an nferior wine (lora, vinum operarium, v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Vinum), or as vinegar. Maas. Sh. I, 3 וכ׳ החמיץ שלא עד תת׳ tamad before fermentation must not be bought with tithe- money; Hull. I, 7; Y. Maasr. V, 52a top. Tosef. Dem. I, 2 הת׳ מן שחזקתו . . . ביאשונה in former years the vinegar of Judea was free from tithes, because it was presum- ably made from tamad; Y. ib. I, 21b top מן מביאין היו הת׳ they used to produce (their vinegar) from tamad (grape shells); Pes. 42b הת׳ מן אלא בא אינ שחזקה. Ib. וכ׳ לאו ת׳ . . וסבר and does R. תמד to put water on pomace or lees. Maasr. V, 6 וכ׳ מדתו כדי ומצא . . . המתבד if one makes pomace wine, putting water on by measure, and finds (after pressing) the same quantity, he is exempt from giving tithes; Pes. 42b, v. רווקא II. B. Bath. 97a גשמים במי שתמדו (Ms. R. שתמדן) when they used rain water to make tamad; Hull. 87b (by analogy from B. Bath. l. c.) וכ׳ במי שתמדו (Ms. R. שתמדן) when they diluted blood with rain water. תמה, תמה (b. h.; cmp. שמם) [to stand still,] to be astonished, amaeed; to wonder; to be undecided. Pesik. R. addit., s. 1וכ לומר תומהים והבריות and men wondered, say- ing, is such a thing possible? Ib. תומהין אתם המגדל דור על וכ׳ you wonder at what occurred to the generation of the tower; has not such a thing occurred &c. Yalk. EEx. 166 מאד גדולה תמיהא ויתמהו and they wondered exceedingly. Pesik. Hahod., p. 43a וכ׳ בלבו ותמה יושב . . היה Abraham sat and was undecided in his heart, saying, which shall I choose?; Gen. R. s. 44.
