I3RITISII ORDERS OF KNIGUTIIOOD. THE MOST NOBLE ORDER OF THE GARTER. Instituted by King Edward IlL about August, 1348. (K.O.) HABIT AND INSIOEIA. Tuu GARTER of dark-blue velvet, edged with gold, bearing the motto in golden letters, with buckle and pendant of gold richly chased. The garter is worn on the left leg below the knee. Tnx MaNTLE of blue velvet, lined with white taffeta; on the left breast the star embroidered. Tna Hoon of crimson velvet. Tna SonooAv likewise of crimson velvet, lined with white taffeta. THE liv of black velvet, lined with white taffeta; a plume of white ostrich feathers, in the centre of which a tuft of black heron’s feathers, all fastened to the hat by a band of diamonds. TUE COLLAR, gold, consisiing of twenty-six pieces, each in - form of a garter, enamelled, azure, and appended thereto, TnE 000scuE, or figure of St. George on horseback, encountering the dragon. The George is worn to the collar; and the lesser George, pendant to a broad, dark-blue ribbon over the left shoulder. THE SvAR of eight points, silver, npon the centre of which the Cross of St. George, gules, encircled with the garter. By a statute passed on the 17th Jan. 1805, the Order is to consist of the Sovereign and twenty-five Knights-Companions, together with such lineal descendants of King GEoRGE IL as may he elected, always excoptiug the Priuce of Wales, who is a constituent part of the original institution. Special statutes have since, at different times, been proclaimed for the admission ot Sovereigns and Extra Knights, the latter of whom have, however, always, become part of the twenty-five Companions on the occurrence of vacancies.
