22 Jan. Birds seen thus far this month at Bird Farm, ca. 1 mi. W Hays, Ellis Co., Kans, include a female Cardinal, crows, starlings, house sparrows, Hairy Woodpecker, Brown Creeper, Pheasant, Meadowlark, Chickadee. Red-shafted Flicker seen at Ft. Hays Kansas State College. Mileage on the Rambler as of today, 11,815 miles. Received several herpetological specimens from Clyde Jones today. 2 Phylorhyncus & 8 Bufo. 24 Jan. Harry Woodpecker & Chickadees at Bird Farm; also English sparrows. Ca. 10 Feb. After considerable snow yesterday, large numbers of Horned Larks and Meadow Larks along shoulders of US Hwy 40. 21 Feb. Tina, Becky, and I drove in the afternoon to the west of Hays to the RR marker, or station, Hogback. Turned north here to Big Creek near Hogback, Ellis Co., Kansas, and spent about an hour inspecting banks of Big Creek, etc. Tina found a Terrapene ornata about 20' from the water. The head was missing. Cool weather with snow banks remaining on the ground. Returned home shortly after 3 pm. 23 Feb. Blizzard. 7 Mar. Drove with the family to the Smoky Hill
