7 Mar. (p.2) River, ca. 3 1/2 mi. W & 2 1/2 mile S of Antonino, Ellis Co., Kansas. Prominent exposures on the north bank, east of road, of shale within strata of limestone. Presumably Smoky Hill shale. Considerable am't's of shells in limestone, some in shale. Willow trees here & other trees on south. Found a Coluber constrictor on talus on bank, at the foot of shale-limestone outcrop. Dead. No evidence of rotting, etc. Collected. Numerous small fishes in the Smoky Hill.

Definite signs of spring about--narcissus (?) in bloom at the campus. Cranes (?) headed north a week or so ago. Green along the RR tracks where burned. On trip to Lakin on 2 March, wheat fields showing considerable greenness in protected spots. Buds of trees swelled considerably. 22 Mar. Had to drive to Albuquerque the 19th of March because of Charles Muller's death. Left about 10 am, arriving about 8:30 pm (MST). Usual route (Dodge, Liberal, Dalhart, Tucumcari, etc.). Albuq. seems a couple weeks ahead of us. Many skunk DOR all the way from Hays to Albuq. Returned to Hays Sunday, 21 March by following rt.
