5 Sept (p.2) retraced to just E of Cloudcroft, where took road toward Mescalero (N. M. 24) to intersection where pavement stops. Here turned left. Just before reaching Mescalero Apache Reservation line, took road west a short distance (primitive road). Collected 2 Junco caniceps here. Evid. much precip. this summer. Very green with many flowers. Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, (some spruce & fir ?), Gambel oak, N. M. locust. 3 mi. N & 4 mi. E Cloudcroft. Otero Co., N. Mex., is approx. position. On return, at about 2 mi. N & 2 mi. E Cloudcroft, Otero Co., N. Mex., picked up a Phrynosoma douglassi from road—evid. struck a glancing blow by car; head wound. On return home, stopped and picked up a DOR Canis latrans (seen on way N & placed near road for pickup) from US Hwy 54, 7 mi. NNE Orogrande, Otero Co., N. Mex. Approx. 100 ft. from the dead coyote, a Taxidea taxus. Both had been dead long enough to smell highly, but the badger may have been more “gone.” 7 Sept. About 3 pm drove to N. Mex. 273, then north. At 5 mi. N of the jct. of Country Club road with 273, stopped and bird hunted. SE 1/4 Sec. 32, T27S, R3E, Dona Ana Co. N. Mex. Saw roadrunner and shrikes. Collected a house finch and a Wilson's warbler—former from mesquite thicket, latter from cottonwood. In latter area, cottonwoods & salt cedar along cotton fields. Also partial skele. Canis familiaris.
