Hunts Hole approximately 12.4 mi. W of the jct. with the RR road. At 4.3 miles from the jct. (W), shot a mockingbird at a cattle tank and picked up a skull and partial skeleton of Canis latrans. 18 Sept. In early afternoon drove with Anita and the girls in the Rambler to Kilbourne Hole and returned in late afternoon. Partly cloudy, windy. Drove without stopping (via La Union) to Hunts Hole, Dona Ana Co., N. Mex. While there shot a Tyrannus verticalis. Larrea, Prosopis, Yucca elata, etc.--at rim of the hole. Then drove about 3 miles north to Kilbourne Hole, Dona Ana Co., N. Mex. A “better” hole than Hunts Hole. Lava virtually complete except for a short gap on the south (sse?). Sediments overlie the lava to considerable depth at places on the easterly side. A fragment or two of fossil bone noticed in sediments above the lava. We all descended into the hole (1/4 +/- mi. across). Shot a Salpinctes obsoleta from the base of the jumbled lava fall.
