Bound in gray-blue cloth with gold lettering on the cover and spine, and a small design in blind stamping on the cover. 342 numbered pages, 5×8⅝. There is one page of advertisements at the back of the book; one side of the page has “Popular Novels,” and the other side, “Novels By H. S. Merriman.” The end-papers are dark gray-blue. There are twelve full-page illustrations in half-tone by Arthur Rackham. There was a reprint of this book in 1899 with the same binding, dated 1899, but with no notice of its having been first published in 1897. This is often mistaken for the first edition.

There are two bindings of this book, one in green cloth and one in blue cloth. Both have the same date on the title page, the same gold pictorial stamping on the cover, and the same gold lettering on the spine. Neither binding has any lettering on the cover, and both have the gilt top. There are 190 numbered pages, and 18 pages of advertisements at the back of the book. The first issue has at the beginning, “A Selected List of Cassell & Company’s Publications.” “6G-10.97” at the bottom of the page in the right-hand corner. The size of the page is 5¼×7⅛. There are four full-page illustrations in colour and nineteen drawings in black and white, which illustrations first appeared in magazine form in Little Folks Magazine, in 1896. This book was published in October, 1897.
