Gelatin colonies: Punctiforni, red-orange, granular, entire. Gelatin stab: Red-orange surface growth; filiform growth in stab. No liquefaction. Agar colonies: Circular, orange-yellow, smooth, glistening, convex. Agar slant: Growth moderate, orange- yellow, becoming cadmium-orange to red- orange, spreading, glistening. Broth : Clear with orange pellicle and sedi- ment. Litmus milk: At first faintly alkaline, be- coming faintly acid with orange sediment. Potato: Scant growth. Indole not produced. Hydrogen sulfide not produced. Faint acidity from glucose. No action on lactose or sucrose. Nitrites produced from nitrates. Traces of ammonia produced. For the action of this species on choles- terol, see Arnaudi (Rendiconti 1st. Lom- bardo Sci. e Lett., 83, 1950, 1). Loeffler's blood serum not liquefied. Aerobic, facultatively anaerobic. Optimum temperature, between 20° and 25° C. Source: Isolated from the skin of fishes. Steinhaus (Jour. Bact., 42, 1941, 771) found a similar organism in the intestine of a caterpillar. Habitat: Unknown. 8. Brevibacterium fuscum (Zimmer- mann, 1890) Breed, 1953. {Bacillus fuscus Zimmermann, Bakt. unserer Trink- u. L. adj. fuscus dark, tawny. Rods, 0.6 by 1.5 microns, occurring singly. Non-motile. Gram-positive. Gelatin colonies: Small, with brownish center and yellowish border. Heavj^ un- dulate growth. Gelatin stab: Gray, filiform growth in stab. Slow crateriform liquefaction. Agar colonies: Circular, brownish jellow to brownish orange, smooth, slightly con- vex, entire. Agar slant: Growth greenish yellow, plu- mose, smooth, raised, undulate. Broth: Turbid, with pellicle and heavy chrome-yellow sediment. Litmus milk: Slightly acid, becoming alkaline, with yellow ring. Potato: Thick, moist, dark chrome-yellow streak. Eventually spreads over entire sur- face. Indole not produced. Nitrites produced from nitrates (Dyar, Ann. N. Y. Acad. Sci., 8, 1895, 361 and 373). Aerobic, facultatively anaerobic. Optimum temperature, 20° C. Comment: Dyar (ibid., 375) has described a variety of this species which liquefies gela- tin more slowly and more completely than does the parent strain. Source: Isolated from Zwonitz River water. L. part. adj. minutus small (literally, diminished); L. noxxn ferula a rod; M.L. noun minutiferula a small rod. Very small rods, 0.4 to 0.9 by 0.7 to 1.0 micron, occurring singly. Non-motile. Gram-positive. Gelatin stab: No liquefaction. Agar colonies: Colorless to faint gray, circular, smooth, entire, glistening. Agar slant: Very thin, transparent, glis- tening growth. Broth: Slight turbidity and sediment. Litmus milk: No change at first; slightly acid after one week. Indole not produced. Hydrogen sulfide not produced. Acid from glucose after 4 days. Slight acid from sucrose. Lacto.se and maltose not fer- mented. Starch not hydrolyzed. Nitrites not produced from nitrates. Aerobic.
