and Pirone, 1942. (Phytopath., 32, 1942, 1080.) poin.set'ti.ae. M.L. fem.n. Poinsettia name of a genus of flowering plants; M.L. gen. noun poinsettiae of Poinsettia. Rods which average 0.3 to 0.8 by 1.0 to 3.0 microns. Pleomorphic, with some cells 8.5 microns in length. Encapsulated. Gran- ules present. Motile by means of a single (rarely 2) polar or lateral flagellum. Gram- positive. Gelatin: Liquefaction. Loeffler's blood-serum: Liquefaction. Beef -extract agar colonies: Round, slightly convex, 0.1 to 1.0 mm in diameter, entire, smooth, non-viscid, colorless and almost transparent. Potato glucose agar slants: Moderate growth, filiform, glistening, non-viscid, salmon- to flesh-colored. Beef -extract broth: Turbid in 24 hours; abundant, pale salmon sediment. No pelli- cle. Milk: Slight acidity but no other visible change for 2 weeks, then a soft curd, reduc- tion of litmus and complete peptonization. Indole not produced. Hydrogen sulfide not produced. Sodium hippurate not hydrolyzed. Moderate to abundant acid, but no gas, from glucose, fructose, mannose, galactose, sucrose, maltose, cellobiose, melibiose, raffinose, glycerol, erythritol, salicin and amygdalin; weak acid from arabinose, xy- lose, lactose, trehalose, dextrin and adonitol; no acid from rhamnose, fucose, inulin, glycogen, mannitol, dulcitol, sorbitol or inositol. Acetylmethylcarbinol not produced. Methyl red test negative. Starch hydrolyzed. No action on cellulose. Non-lipolytic. Tellurite reduced. Nitrites not produced from nitrates. Asparagine not utilized as carbon-nitro- gen source. Uric acid not utilized; urea not hydrolyzed. Aerobic. Growth occurs after 24 hours from 15° to .36° C.; after 48 hours from 7° to 12° C. No growth above 36° or below 7° C. at the end of a week. Source: Fourteen cultures isolated from diseased stems of poinsettia. Euphorbia pulcherrima. Habitat: Causes a canker of stems and spots on leaves of the poinsettia. 27. Corynebacterium tritici (Hutchin- son, 1917) Burkholder, 1948. (Pseudomonas tritici Hutchinson, India Dept. of Agr., Bact. Ser., 1, 1917, 174; Burkholder, in Man- ual, 6th ed., 1948, 400.) tri'ti.ci. L. noun triticum wheat; M.L. neut.n. Triticum generic name of wheat; L. gen. noun tritici of wheat. Rods 0.8 by 2.4 to 3.2 microns. Motile by means of a single polar flagellum. Gram- positive. Gelatin: No liquefaction. Agar colonies: Bright yellow becoming orange, glistening, moist, entire. Agar brownish. Broth: Turbid. Thin pellicle. Milk: Yellow surface and yellow precipi- tate. Little change. Hydrogen sulfide not produced. Acid but no gas from glucose and lactose. Nitrites produced from nitrates. This species is very similar to and may be identical with Corynebacterium rathayi Dowson. Source: Isolated from slimy heads of wheat in India. Habitat: Pathogenic on wheat, Triticum aestivum. 28. Corynebacterium flaccunifaciens (Hedges, 1922) Dowson, 1942. {Bacterium flaccumfaciens Hedges, Science, 55, 1922, 433; also see Phytopath., 16, 1926, 20; Dow- son, Trans. Brit. Myc. Soc, 25, 1942, 313.) flac.cum.fa'ci.ens. L. adj. flaccus flabby; L. part. adj. faciens making; M.L. part. adj. flaccumfaciens wilt-making. Rods 0.3 to 0.5 by 0.6 to 3.0 microns. Mo- tile by means of a single polar flagellum; also non-motile (Adams and Pugsley, Jour. Dept. Agr. Victoria, 32, 1934, 306). Gram- positive. Gelatin: Liquefaction feeble. Beef agar slants: Rather moderate growth, glistening, flat, smooth, viscid and yellow.
