the Statutes of the Realm, as far as that edition extends, namely, to the end of the reign of Queen Anne (13 Anne) . Thenceforth Ruffhead's edition, by Serjeant Runnington, 1786, has been followed, as far as it extends, namely, to the end of the session of the twenty fifth year of the reign of King George the Third (25 Geo. 3). Thence downwards, it is believed , all editions are alike. The variances between the Statutes of the Realm and Ruffhead's edition are partly shown in footnotes or in parentheses; a complete table of those variances is given on pages 1-6.

3. The Chronological Table covers the whole period between the passing of the earliest statute of the Parliament of England (1235) and the end of the year 1950. Ante-Union Acts of the Parliaments of Scotland and Ireland are not included in the Table.[1] Acts of the Parliament of England extended to Ireland by Poynings Act[2] are, in relation to Ireland , treated as Ante-Union Acts of the Parliament of Ireland, with the exception that the repeals of such enactments by the Statute Law Revision (Ireland) Act, 1872, are noted.

4. The Chronological Table comprises all Acts printed in the "Statutes of the Realm," and, after the end of that edition, all Acts printed by the King's or Queen's Printers as Public or as Public General.[3] Many of these Acts, however, cannot be regarded as public Acts affecting the community generally, being special or private Acts relating to particular persons or places or to private Acts of this kind are distinguished by the italic entries Local, Personal, Private, in the second column of the Table (except in cases in which they are shown not to be in force); the Table does not profess to show all repeals affecting these Acts. Further means of reference to the provisions of these Acts is afforded by the Index to Local and Personal Acts prepared under the direction of the Statute Law Committee, which covers the period 1801 to 1947.

5. The first column of the Chronological Table sets out the chapter numbers of the statutes according to the regnal year and session. The second column contains the following particulars:—

(a) As respects Acts repealed, the short title of the Act (or, in the absence of a short title, the general subject) is printed in italic type with a reference to the repealing enactment;

  1. ↑ A volume of the Ante-Union Irish Acts ( Revised ) was published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office in 1885 ; that volume contains an Index to such Acts arranged like the Index forming Volume 2 of the present work . Information as to Ante-Union Irish Acts is given in the Chronological Table and Index of Statutes in Force in Northern Ireland (see footnote , p . ix below) . A volume of the Ante - Union Scottish Acts (Revised) was published by His Majesty's Stationery Office in 1908 .
