Landscape painter, pupil of Munich Academy. Trav- elled extensively, both on the Continent and in England. Studied Ruysdael and Evcr- dingen, and loved to paint Nature in her more sombre aspects. He was appointed court-painter to the Duke of Saxe-Mein- ingen, and member of Stockholm Academy.
