This family was anciently settled on the Scottish Border, and John Armstrong, laird of Giltsknock Hall, co. Eskedale, the most famous leader of the warlike clans that made frequent inroads into the northern counties of England, was, with many of his retainers, executed about 1530. Andrew Armstrong, his descendant, and ancestor of the present family, migrated to Ireland early in the I7th century, and settled in co. Fermanagh.
