□ За эту неделю мы сделали большой шаг вперёд. We made a lot of progress this week. • Вот уж час, как мы тут бьёмся — ни взад, ни вперёд. We've been struggling here for an hour and still haven't gotten anywhere.

впереди ahead. Главная работа ещё впереди. The main work still lies ahead. • ahead of. Он стоял впереди нас в очереди. He was ahead of us in line. • up ahead. Кто это там впереди? Who is that up ahead?

впечатление impression. Он производит впечатление серьёзного работника. He gives the impression of being a serious worker. — У меня создалось впечатление, что вы это знали. I was under the impression that you knew it. • influence. Я ещё находился под впечатлением вчерашнего разговора. I was still under the influence of yesterday's conversation.
□ Его рассказ произвёл на меня удручающее впечатление. His story depressed me terribly.

вплотную (/cf плотный/) up close. Я подошёл к нему вплотную. I came up close to him.
□ Мы теперь взялись за это дело вплотную. We really mean business on this job now.

вплоть down to. Он изучил дело вплоть до мельчайших деталей. He studied the matter down to the last detail.

вполне (/cf полный/) entirely. Это вполне понятно. That's entirely understandable. • fully. Я с вами вполне согласен. I fully agree with you. • perfectly. Вы можете быть вполне уверены, что работа будет сделана во-время. You can be perfectly sure the work will be done on time. • completely. Вы можете на него вполне положиться. You can rely on him completely. • quite. Директор вполне доволен вашей работой. The manager is quite pleased with your work.

впору (/cf пора/) fit. Вам эти башмаки впору? Do these shoes fit you? • suitable. Это впору только старикам. That's only suitable for old people.

вправо (/cf правый/) to the right. Наш дом вправо от книжной лавки. Our house is to the right of the bookstore. — Не доходя до парка, сверните вправо. Just before you reach the park turn to the right.

впредь (See вперёд) in the future. Впредь будьте осторожнее. Be more careful in the future.

впрочем but then. Я вам не советую ехать ночью, впрочем, как знаете. I don't advise you to go at night; but then do as you please. — Мне так кажется, впрочем я не знаю точно. It seems so to me, but then I don't know exactly. • but then again. Впрочем я не знаю, придёт ли он вообще. But then again, I don't know whether he'll come after all.

впрыскивание injection.

впускать (dur of впустить) to allow in. Сюда никого не впускают. No one is allowed in here.

впустить (впущу, впустит; pct of впускать) to let in. Вас ночью в дом не впустят. They won't let you into the house at night.

впустую (/cf пустой/) for nothing. Выходит, что я всё это время работал впустую! It turns out then that I've worked all this time for nothing!
□ Перестаньте говорить впустую, он вам всё равно не поверит. Don't waste your breath; he won't believe you anyway.

враг (-а) enemy. Даже злейший враг не скажет о нём, что он нечестен. Even his worst enemy wouldn't say he isn't honest. — Я не хочу создавать себе врагов. I don't want to make any enemies. — *Язык мой — враг мой! My tongue is my enemy. — Враг напал неожиданно. The enemy attacked suddenly.

вразрез contrary. To, что вы говорите, идёт вразрез с его точкой зрения. What you're saying is contrary to his point of view.

врасплох unawares. Их застали врасплох, и они за это поплатились. They were caught unawares and paid for it. • by surprise. Это предложение застало меня врасплох. This offer took me by surprise.

вратарь (-ря M) goalkeeper, goalie.

врать (вру, врёт; p врал, -ли; /pct: со-/) to lie. Полно врать! Stop lying! — Ври, да не завирайся! Take it easy. Lie, but don't overdo it.
□ *Ишь врёт, как сивый мерин! He's the damnedest liar.

врач (-а M) doctor. Этот врач специалист по внутренним болезням. This doctor is a specialist in internal diseases. — Он хороший врач. He's a good doctor. • physician. Кто тут районный врач? Who is the district physician here?

врачебный medical. Вы должны будете явиться на врачебный осмотр. You'll have to appear for a medical examination.

вращаться to revolve. Это колесо вращается при помощи ремня. The wheel revolves by means of a belt. • to center. Разговор вращался вокруг последних событий. The conversation centered about recent events.
□ Боюсь, что ваш приятель вращается в дурной среде. I'm afraid your friend travels in bad company.

вред (-а) damage. В прошлом году саранча причинила посевам большой вред. The locusts did a good deal of damage to the crop last year.
принести вред to harm. Это лекарство принесёт вам только вред. That medicine will only harm you.

вредитель (M) pest. В нашем фруктовом саду много вредителей. There are a lot of pests in our orchard. • saboteur. Этот человек был осуждён по процессу вредителей. This man was convicted in one of the saboteurs' trials.

вредительство sabotage. Эта катастрофа произошла не случайно, тут было явное вредительство. This catastrophe didn't happen accidentally, but was definitely sabotage.

вредить to hurt. Эти разговоры вредят его репутации. This talk is hurting his reputation. • to harm. Вредить он вам не будет, но помощи от него не ждите. He won't harm you, but don't expect any help from him.

вредный (sh -дна) dangerous. Это вредная привычка. That's a dangerous habit.
вредное производство hazardous industry. У него рабочий день короче, так как он работает на вредном производстве. His working day is shorter because he works in a hazardous industry.

вредно harmful. Ему даже по лестнице ходить вредно. It's even harmful for him to walk up stairs.
□ Для вас здешний климат вреден. The climate here is not good for you.
