An examination with a magnifying glass gives what is, I believe, the explanation : the scribe of the papal chancery wrote D (or in the first case probably O), and another hand has tried (rather unsuccessfully), by extend- ing the top stroke to the right, to alter the letter to T. 4 It was preserved before the fire of 1731, and Rymer (ed. 1739-45, vi, pt. 1, opposite p. 199) gives a facsimile of it.
