A few miles before reaching Castle Rock appeared scrub oaks on dry hills and long leafed pines in valleys. In valleys we saw perfectly stratified unconsolidated horizontal formations, with hills capped by hard horizontal rocks. Further north recognized Niobrara ridge, Dakota ridge and Triassic ridge to the west of R.R.
