THE CALL TO SADDLE[1]

On horseback, on horseback,
On the tail of an elk.[2]

To Rouen, to Rouen,
On the tail of a little white horse.

To Paris, to Paris,
On the tail of a little mouse.

To Versailles, to Versailles,
On the tail of a big spotted cow.[3]

THE LAMB.

Baa, baa, becky baa!
Little lamb running through the woods,
Wandering, jumping full of joy,
Runs so fast that he falls, alas!
Then will cry: "Oh, la la!
Friend[4] ewe, to me, to me!"

  1. Boute-selle (s. m.) signal to saddle, from bouter, to put, and selle, saddle.
  2. L'original means here the Canadian elk.
  3. La vache caille, of different colors.
