36. Gif sē Sunu ēow alyst, gē bēoð soðlīce frīge.

37. Ic wāt þæt gē synt Abrahames bearn; ac gē sēceað mē tō ofslēanne, for þām mīn spǣc ne wunaþ on ēow.[1]

38. Ic sprece þæt þe ic mid Fæder geseah; and gē dōð þā þing þē gē mid ēowrum fæder gesāwon.[2]

39. Ðā andswarodon hig and cwǣdon tō him, Abraham is ūre fæder. Ðā cwæð sē Hǣlend tō him, Gif gē Abrahames bearn synt, wyrceað Abrahames weorc.[3]

40. Nū gē seceað mē tō ofslēanne, þone man þe ēow sǣde sōðfæstnesse, þā þe ic gehȳrde of Gode; ne dyde Abraham swā.[4]

41. Gē wyrceað ēowres fæder weorc. Hig cwǣdon witodlīce tō him, Ne synt wē of forligere acennede; we habbað ānne God tō Fæder.[5]

42. Witodlīce sē Hǣlend cwæþ tō him, Gif God wǣre ēowre Faeder, witodlīce gē lufedon mē. Ic cōm of Gode; nē cōm ic nā fram mē sylfon, ac hē mē sende.[6]

43. Hwī ne gecnāwe gē mīne sprǣce? [for þām þe gē ne magon gehȳran mīne spǣce.][7]
