Anthon, Charles Edward, educator, numismatist, was born Dec. 6, 1823, in New York City. He was a son of John Anthon. In 185383 he held the chair of history and bellesin the college of the city of New York. He was an enthusiastic collector of coins; and owned one of the most valuable collections ever gathered in the United States. For some time he was president of the American numismatic society. He died June 7, 1883, in New York City. Anthon, George Christian, lawyer, educator, founder, was born March 19, 1830, in Red Hook, N.Y. He was the oldest son of the Rev. Henry Anthon. He visited the state of Kansas in 1854; and while there helped to found the city of Lawrence. He served in the union army in 1863-63; and attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He located in Kansas at Leavenworth; was mayor of that city in 1863-73; was a member of the Kansas state legislature in 1873; and was government director of the Union pacific railroad in 1886.
