Ayres, Alfred, actor, author, was born Feb. 26, 1850, in Montrose, Ohio. He is an actor and dramatist. He is the author of The Verbalist; The Mentor; Acting and Actors; and The Essentials of Elocution. Ayres, Anne, author, was born in 1816 in England. She was the first member of an American sisterhood in the protestant episcopal church, becoming a sister of the holy communion in 1845. She was the author of Evangelical Sisterhoods? and Life of W. H.

Muhlenberg. She died in 1896. Ayres, Brown, educator, college president, was born May 25, 1856, in Memphis, Tenn. Since 1904 he has been president of the university of Tennessee. Ayres, Daniel, physician, surgeon, donor, was born in 1824 in Jamaica, N.Y. In 1845 he began the practice of medicine in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1857 he became professor of surgery in the Long Island mescal college; and in 1873 was made professor emeritus. He gave a quarter of a million dollars to Wesleyan university. He died Jan. 19, 1892, in

He is the author of Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics. Ayres, George B., physician, founder, was born June 15, 1856, in Olmsted county, Minn. He began the practice of medicine in 1876; and for three years was assistant professor of anatomy in the medical department of Michigan university. In 1880, with Dr. Mercer, he founded the Omaha medical college, where he filled the chair of anatomy for three years ; and then filled the. chair of clinical surgery. He was a member of various medical associations and societies. He died Aug. 19, 1890, in Omaha, Neb. Ayres, George Frederick, educator, college president, author, was born May 17, 1865, in Hannibal, Mo. Since 1902 he has been president of the Lindenwood female college of St. Charles, Mo. He is the author of Present Day, Attitudes Toward the Bible. Ayres, Horace, forester, geologist, scientist, was born Sept. 20, 1856, in Allamuchy, N.J. Ayres, Joseph Gerrick, soldier, naval surgeon, was born about 1840 in New Hampshire. In 1862-63 he was second and first lieutenant in the fifteenth regiment New York volunteers. In 1864 he was acting assistant surgeon in the United States army; and the same year was appointed acting assistant surgeon in the United States navy. In 1866 he was promoted to assistant surgeon; in 1869 became past assistant surgeon; and in 1878 was promoted to surgeon. In 1898-1901 he was in charge of the naval hospital at Boston, Mass. He became medical inspector in 1895; was made medical director in 18^8; and was retired in 1901. Ayres, Milan Church, journalist, author, 1850, in Lewiston, 111. Since 1890 he has been editor of the Boston Daily Advertiser. He is the author of Phillips Brooks in Boston. Ayres, Philip Wheelock, educator, author, was born May 26, 1861, in Winterset, Iowa. Since 1898 he has been superintendent of the Summer school in philanthropic work of the New York charity organization society. He is the author of Historical Reviews; and various Monographs. Ayres, Romeyn Beck, soldier, was bom Dec. 20, 1825, in East Creek, N.Y. He served in the civil war; and in 1864 he was made major-general of volunteers for conspicuous galla,ntry in the battles of the Virginia campaign. He was promoted in regular course to the colonelcy in the third artillery in 1879. He died Dec. 4, 1888, in Fort Hamilton, N.Y. Ayres, Samuel Gardiner, librarian, author, was born April 25, 1865, in Peru, N.Y. Since 1888 he has been librarian of the Drew theological seminary at Madison, N.J. He is the author of Drew Theological Seminary Record; Fifty Literary Evenings; and History of the English Bible.

Ayres, Samuel Loring Percival, naval ofwas bom about 1840 in Connecticut. In 1858 he entered the United States navy as third assistant engineer. In 1861 he was promoted to second assistant engineer; and participated in the engagement with the batteries on the passage down the Potomac, the bombardment and passage of fort^ Jackson and St. Philip, and the capture of New Orleans. In 1863 he was promoted to first assistant engineer; and in 1870 became chief engineer.
