Beattie, James A., educator, clergyman, college president, was born May 11, 1845, in Ohio. He is a regular minister of the Disciples christian church; and has received the degrees of A.M. and LL.D. In 1876-81 he was a teacher and part of the time president of Bedford college of Indiana; in 1881-89 was teacher ajid part of the time president of Oskaloosa college of Iowa; and in 1889-96 was a teacher in C'otner university at Lincoln,
Neb. In 1896-1900 he was president of the state normal school of Nebraska; in 19001903 was president of the eastern state normal school of Oregon; in 1903-04 was president of Hiram college of Ohio; and since 1904 has been vice-chancellor and professor of economics and sociology at Cotner university of Lincoln, Neb. Beatty, Erkuries, soldier, was bom Oct. 9, 1759. In 1784 he was appointed first lieutenant in the regular army. In 1786-88 he was paymaster of the western army. He died Feb. 33, 1833, in Princeton, N.J. Beatty, H. 0., lawyer, jurist. Sometime between 1865 and 1899 he was associate justice of the supreme court of Nevada. Beatty, James H., lawyer, legislator, jurwas born in Lancaster, Ohio. He was a member of the Idaho territorial legislature; and a member of the constitutional convention. Bucks county, Pa. He attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the revolutionary war. In 1780 he resumed the practice of medicine in Treilton, N.J. In 1783-85 he was a delegate from New Jersey to the continental congress. In 1793-95 he was a representative from New Jersey to the third congress. In 17951805 he was secretary of state of New Jersey. He died May 30, 1836, in Trenton, N.J.

In 1893 he was a member of the jury on painting for Pennsylvania and New York to the World's Columbian exposition; and in 1900 was a, member of the national advisory board of the Paris exposition. the fine arts committee of the Pan- American exposition at Buffalo; and in 1904 was a member of the national advisory committee of the universal exposition at St. Louis, Mo. Since 1896 he has been director of fine arts of the Carnegie Institute at Pittsburg, Pa. Among his best known paintings are Return to Labor; Plowing the Orchard; and the Farmer's Boy. Beatty, Martin, congressman, was born in Kentucky. In 1833-35 he was a representative from Kentucky to the twenty-third congress. He died in Southfork, Ky. Beatty, Samuel, farmer, soldier, was born Dee. 16, 1830, in Mifflin county. Pa. He served nearly two years in the Mexican war as first lieutenant in the third regiment Ohio volunteers. He was made brigadier-general of volunteers in 1863; commanded a division in the battle of Stone River and was brevetted major-general in 1865. He died May 26, 1885, in Jackson, Ohio.
