Hersey, George Dallas, physician, author, was born in 1847 in Massachusetts. He is a prominent physician of Providence, R.I. He is the author of Medical History of the Colony and State of Rhode Island.

Hersey, Heloise Edwina, educator, editor, author, was born Feb. 22, I855, in Oxford, Maine. In 1876 she graduated from Vassar college; and since 1899 has been a lecturer and editorial writer on Youth's Companion. She is the author of To Girls, a Budget of Letters.

Hersey, Samuel Freeman, merchant, banker, state legislator, congressman. was born April 12, 1812, in Sumner, Maine. He was a member of the Maine state legislature in 1842, 1857, 1865, 1867 and 1869; and of the executive council in 1851–52. In 1873–75 be was a representative to the forty-third congress. He died Feb. 3. 1875. in Bangor, Maine.

Hershey, Scott F., lecturer, clergyman, author, was born in 1852 in Colburn, Ind. He has filled pastorates in Washington. D.C., Boston. Mass., Wooster, Ohio: and since 1908 has preached in New Castle, Del. He is president of the American association oi ministers for the promotion of peace. He is the author of The Roman Papacy: and The Hereafter.

Herter, Christian Archibald, physician, author. was born Sept. 3. 1865. in Glenville, Conn. He was an investigator in clinical pathology; and in 1903 was professor of pharmacology and therapeutics at Columbia university. He is the author of Diagnosis of Nervous Diseases; and Lectures on Chemical Pathology.

Hertz, Henry Lamartine, government official. was born Nov. 19. 1847, in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1872–78 he was a clerk in the recorder's office of Cook county. Ill.: in 1874–84 was a clerk in the criminal court; and 1884-92 was coroner of Cook county, Ill. In 1896–98 he was state treasurer of Illinois: and since 1901 has been United States collector of internal revenue for the first district of Illinois. He is the owner of a large stock farm. He is president of the Danish-American association for the United States.

Hertzberg, Hans Rudolph Reinhard, journalist. lawyer, author. poet, was born July 1, 1871. in San Antonio. Texas. He was educated at the Agricultural and mechanical college of Texas and at the university of Texas. In 1892 he began the practice of law and in 1892 began editing a newspaper. In 1902–04 be was chief associate editor of the New Orleans Harlequin: in 1903 was editorial and special writer of the New Orleans Times-Democrat; in 1904 was a special writer and dramatic critic of the New York Journal and in 1907–09 was editorial, special writer and dramatic editor of the New Orleans Item. He is editor and proprietor of Hertzberg's Weekly, a paper devoted to fiction, verse, epigrams, politics and the drama. He is the author of Lyrics of Love, a volume of verse.

Hervey, Alpheus Baker, soldier, scientist, author, was born March 31, 1839. in Triangle, N.Y. He was educated at the Alfred and Oxford academies and in 1861 graduated from the theological department of the St. Lawrence university. He has received the degree of A.M. from Tufts college and A.M. and Ph.D. from the St. Lawrence university. Since 1861 he has filled pastorates of universalist churches at Malone, Afton and Troy. N.Y., Southbridge; Peabody and Taunton, Mass.; and Bath. Maine. In 1888–94 he was president and is now a trustee of the St. Lawrence university. He is the author of Sea Mosses; Beautiful Wild Flowers; and Flowers of Field and Forest. He has translated several works from the German.

Hertzel, Arthur B., surgeon of Kansas City, Mo., was born July 26. 1870. in West Point, Iowa. He has received the degrees of B.S., M.D. and Ph.D. In 1902–09 he was professor of pathology in the university medical college of Kansas City, and since 1909 has been associate professor of surgery in that institution. He has made researches on the anatomy and pathology of the peritoneiuu and kindred subjects.

Hervey, Dwight B., clergyman, college president, was born June 4. 1834. in Martinsburg. Ohio. He received the rudiments of his education in the public schools and graduated from the Jefferson college of Pennsylvania. He is a successful clergyman of the presbyterian church; has filled pastorates in Mount Vernon, Ohio, for twelve years; in Granville for six years; and for twelve years was president of the Granville female academy. He now fills a pastorate in Edinboro, Pa.

Hervey, Walter Lowrie, educator, author, was born Swpt. 28, 1862, in Mt. Vernon. Ohio. Since 1894 he has bddn examiner of the board of education at New York: and dean of the Chautauqua school of pedagogy. In 1892–97 he was president of the Teachers college. He is the author of Picture Work.

Herzog, Felix Benedict, lawyer, inventor, was born Dec. 27, 1859, in Ni-w York City. Since 1853 he has been engaged as an electrical engineer and patent attorney. He is the inventor of electrical devices, including automatic switch boards, annunciators, and
