Holmes, Oliver Wendell, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born March 8, 1841, in Boston, Mass. He is a set of Dr. O, W. Holmes, the poet and essayist. He served three years in the Massachusetts volunteers. In 1882 09 he was associate justice; and in 1899-1902 was chief justice of the supreme court of Massachusetts. Since 1902 he has been associate justice of the supreme court of the United States. He is the author of The Common Law. Lectures at Lowell Institute; Speeches; and edited Kant's Commentaries.

Holmes, Richard Sill, clergyman, journalist, author, was born July 6, 1942, in Brooklyn. N.Y. He filled pastorates in Warren and Pittsburg, Pa. In 1904 he organized and became president of the Holmes Press. of Philadelphia, Pa. He is the author of The Maid of Honor, a novel. He died Sept. 5. 1912, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Holmes, Samuel Jackson, educator, author, was born March 7, 1868, in Henry, Ill. He has taught in the university of California, the San Diego high school, the University of Michigan, and since 1905 has been professor of zoology at the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of Synopsis of California Stalk-eyed Crustacea; and The Biology of the Frog.

Holmes, Sidney T., civil engineer, lawyer. jurist, congressman, was born in August,1815, in Schaghticoke, N.Y. He was loan commissioner for Madison county in 1818 and 1850; and in 1851-43 was judge and surrogate for the same county. In 1865-67 he was a representative from New York to the thirty-ninth congress. He died in Madison county, N.Y.

Holmes, Theophilus Hunter, soldier, was born in 1804 in Sampson county, N.C. He was commission major in 1855; and was made a brigadier general in the service of the state. He died June 21, 188, in Fayetteville, N.C.

Holmes, Uriel, Congressman, was born in Connecticut. In 1817-19 he was a representative from Connecticut to the fifteenth congress. He died Nov. 1, 1827, in Connecticut.

Holmes, Walton H. I, railway president. founder, was born in 1861 in Independence. Mo. In 1882 he became president of the Kansas City and Westport horse railway company and in 1586 introduced the cabin, and later was the first to introduce the electric trolley. He became president of the metropolitan street railway company of Kansas City, Mo.; and in 1000 was president of the American street railway association.

Holmes, William, lumberman. financier, was born April 18, 1830, in New Brunswick, Canda, He was educated in the public

and private schools of his native town. In 1854 he moved to Green Bay, Wis. thence to Escanaba, Mich.: and in 1855 to Menominee, Mich. For forty years he has been actively engaged in the lumber business; is part owner of a paper mill, and a stockholder in the Lamberman's national bank. He has taken an active part in the business and public affairs of his city: and has filled numerous offices of trust.

Holmes, William Henry, geologist, author, was born Dec. 1, 1846, in Harrison County, Ohio. In 1872 he was appointed assistant on the United

States geological survey; and spent eight years in field work and explorations in the Rocky mountain region. In 1881 he was made geologist in charge of the division of illustrations. In 1898-1902 he was curator in the Field Columbian musem; and in 1947 was curator of the national gallery of art. He has edited Hayden's Atlas of Colorado; that of the Yellowstone country: the eleventh and twelfth annual reports of the geological survey: and other geological publications.

Holmes, Zachariah, architect, builder, legislator, pioneer, was born Sept. 23, 1853, in Sweden. In 1871 he came to the United States,

and was one of the first settlers of Rapid City, S.D.. where he has lived since 1877. He was the founer of the settlement around Black Hawk, S. D; and is a successful architect and builder, He was elected a member of the state legislature in 1893 and 1897: has served on various important committees; and has held several positions of trust and honor.

Holsey, Hopkins, journalist, congressman. was born in 1799 in Virgins. In 1835-38 he was a representative from Georgia to the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth congresses. He subsequently edited the Athens Banner. He died March 31, 1839, in Columbus, Ga.
