subsequently studied medicine. He is now a practicing physician of Carbon, Texas; and examining physician for several life insurance companies. He is a member of several medical and scientific associations; has filled several positions of trust and honor in Eastland county, Texas; and is the examining physician for various fraternal and patriotic societies.

Hall, Harry Hinckley, lawyer, counselor, was born Feb. 12, 1846, in Rock Island, I. He was educated at the Flushing institute

of Rock Island and in the colleges of Germany and France at Halberstadt and at Tours. In 1860 he graduated from Tulane university law school: and has since practiced law in New Orleans. La. He has been counsel of the New Orleans and Northwest- ern railroad company: consel of the Albama and Vicksburg railway company; and counsel of the Shreveport and Pacific railway company. He has also been attorney for the St. Charles street railway company of New Orleans; and in 1989-1990 was dean of the law school in Tulane university at New Orleans, La.

Hall, Henry, journalist, author, was born Dec. d. 1845. in Auburn, N.Y. In 1880 he was appointed by the government as special agent to collect the statistics of American ship-building. Since 1982 he has been business manager of the New York Tribune. He is the author of The History of Cayuga County: History of the Nineteenth New York Volunteers, and the Third Artillery: American Navigation; and America's Successful men, in two volumes. Hall, Henry Bryan, engraver, artist, was born March 11, 1808, in London, England. His engravings are chiefly of portraits, twelve of which were of Washington, after different artists. He went into business in the latter part of his life with his three sons, but devoted his personal attention to etchings of historical characters of the Revolution, His sons continued the business in New York. He died April 28, 1884, in Morrisania, N.Y.

Hall, Henry Seymour, soldier, was born in New York. He enlisted in the civil war as a private sollier; and in 1865 was brevetted colonel and brigadier-general of volunteers. He was mustered out in 1866; and in 1891 he was awarded a medal of honor.

Hall, Hiland, lawyer, jurist, congressman, governor, author, was born July 20, 1795, in Beruingtou. Vt. In 1827 he was elected to the state legislature: and for several yeu14 was state's attorney. In 1831-43 be was a representative from Vermont to the twenty-second, twenty-third, twenty-fourth, the twenty-fifth, twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh congresses. He was bank commissioner for Vermont in 1843-46; four years judge of the supreme court; in 1830 second comptroller of the treasury; and in 1851-54 was and commissioner for California. He was the twenty-second governor of Vermont in 1838-6. He was the author of History of Vermont to 1701. He died Dec. 18, 1885, in Springfeld, Mass.

Hall, Isaac Hollister, lawyer, lecturer, author, was born Dec. 12, 1837, in Norwalk, Conn. He was a lawyer and oriental scholar: and lecturer on New Testament Greek in Johns Hopkins university in 1884-96. He was the author of American Greek Testaments, a critical Bibliography. He died July 2. 1896, in Mt. Vernon. N.Y. Hall, Jairus William, soklier, was born in New York. In 1961 he was second lieutenant in the fourth regiment Michigan infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier. general of volunteers. He was honorably mastered out in 1866,

Hall, James, clergyman, author, was born Aug. 22, 1744, in Carlisle, Pa. He was al presbyterian clergyman in the Northern slates. He was the author of Narrative of a Most Extraordinary Work of Religion in North Carolina; and also Missionary Tour Through the Mississippi and Southwest Coutry. He died July 25, 1826, in Bethany. N.C.

Hall, James, soldier, lawyer, author, was boru Aug. 19, 1793, in Philadelphia, Pa. le served throughout the war of 1812; and was promoted to the rank of captain. He was engaged in the practice of law; and was ap- pointed judge by the Ohio legislature. He was state Treasurer for four years. He established the Western Mouthly Magazine in Cincinnati, Obio; and was president of the Commercial bank of that city. He was the author of History and Biography of the North American Indians, in three volumes. He died July 4, 1868, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Hall, James, paleontologist, educator, author, was born Sept. 12. 1811, in Hingham. Mass. He was professor of geology at the Troy polytechnic school from 1838; and state geologist of New York from 1537. He is the author of Geology of the Fourth Dis- trict of New York; Paleontology of New York; and Geological Survey of Wisconsin. He died Aug. 7, 1808, in Echo Bill, N.H.

Hall, James, educator, artist, author, was born Dec, 20, 1969, in Boston, Mass. 1896-1902 he was supervisor of drawing in, the public schools of Springfield, Mass. Since 1900 he has exhibited in Boston, Philadelphia and other cities. He is the author of With Brush and Pen; and Pen Rendering.

Hall, James Abram, soldier, was born Ang. 10. 1835, in Jefferson, Maine, He rose to the rank of brevet brigadier general, his services being especially conspicuous at Gettysburg. He was, for thirteen years after
