eratic committee. In 1897-1911 he was a representative from Virginia to the fifty. fifth, fifty-sixth, fifty-seventh. fifty-eighth, fifty-ninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congress as a democrat.

Lamb, John E., lawyer, congressman, was lar Dec. 26, 1852, in Terre Haute, Ind. He became prosecuting attorney for the fourteenth judicial district of Indiana in 1875. In 1883-86 he was a representative from Indiana to the forty-eighth congress as a democrat.

Lamb, Mrs. Martha Joan Reade, journalist, historian, author, barn Aug. 13, 1829, in Plained. Mass. She was editor of the Magazine of American History in 1883-93. She was the author of The History of the City of New York, her chief work, which is the result of a vast amount of patient labor and research. Her other works include, Spicy, a novel; Play School Stories; The Christmas Owl; Snow and Sunshine, a Story for Girls; and Wall Street in History. She died Jan, 2, 1893, in New York City.

Lamb, Robert N., soldier, lawyer, banker, jurist, was born Nov. 23, 1821, in Perry county, Il. He received the rudiments of his education in the public schools; and subsequently attended Hanover college, and the De Panw university. In 1848-49 he was prosecuting attorney; and for ten years fol lowing was auditor of Switzerland county. During the civil war he served in the union army, with the rank of captain. In 1864-70 he was judge of the common pleas and circuit courts. In 1889 he was president of the First National bank of Indianapolis. Ind., and since 1887 has been president of the Consumers' gas trust company.

Lamb, William, soldier. merebant, statesman, was born Sept. 7, 1835, in Norfolk, Va. He attended the Rappahannock military An image should appear at this position in the text. academy and William and Mary college; and in 1935 was valedictorian of his class. During the war he built and commanded Fart Fisher, N.C., and repulsed General Butler and Admiral Porter on Christmas, 1864. He was captured at Fort Fisher, after being desperately wounded, on Jan. 15, 1865. These were the two heaviest naval bombardments in the annals of war; and the capture of the works was after the most prolonged hand to hand fight during the civil war. For six years Colonel Lamb was mayor of Norfolk; was actively identified with public affairs presided at both democratic and republican state conventions; and was several times on the presidential electoral ticket. He engaged in the shipping business and the export of Pocahantas coal and has attained prominence as a successful merchant. His literary, historical and political addresses have won for him fame as an orator and scholar. St. Lawrence university of New York conferred upon him the degree of LL.D. in 1890. Since 1875 1 has represented Germany, Sweden and Norway at Norfolk. King Oscar 11. has conferred upon him the knighthood of Wasa for distinguished services.

Lambdin, Alfred Cochran, physician, journalist, author, was born Jan. 29, 1846, in Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1875 he has been managing editor of the Philadelphia Times. He is the author of An Account of the Battle of Germantown.

Lambdin, George Cochran, painter, artist, was born in 1830 in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was especially successful as a painter of still life particularly flowers. His works include Dead Wife: Ask Me No More: Portrait of Mrs. Joseph Harrison; and Pink and Yellow Roses. He died Jun. 28, 1896, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Lambdin, James R., painter, artist, was Born May 10, 1807, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was professor of me arts in the university of Pennsylvania; for twenty-five years an active officer of the Pennsylvania academy of the line arts, and has been president of the artists' fund society. He died Jan. 31, 1889, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Lambert, Alexander, pianist, composer, was born Nor, 1, 1882, in Poland. Rice 1888 he has been director of the New York college of music. He is the author of Ave Maria Valse Impromptu; and Romanza.

Lambert, John, legislator, congressman, was born in 1748 in New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey legislature; and in 1802-03 was vice-president of the council and acting governor, In 1805-00 he was a representative from New Jersey to the ninth and tenth congresses. In 1809-15 he was a member of the United States Senate, He died Feb. 4, 1823, in Amwell, N.J.

Lambert, John J. soldier, journalist, was born Jun. 10. 1837, in Ireland. Baring the civil war he served in the union army: first as lieutenant, and later as captain of company I, ninth regiment, Iowa volunteer cavalry, until 1806. He afterward was Commissioned a second lieutenant in the fifth United States infantry, serving during 1867-72. Since 1870 he has been editor of The Daily Chieftan of Pueblo, Colo. In 1890 he was appointed receiver of the United States land office at Pueblo for four years: and in 1899 he was again appointed to the same office for a term of four years.

Lambert, John S., lawyer, jurist, was born Feb. 4, 1851, in Johnsonville, NY. In 1878. he praticed law in Fredonia, N.Y.; nil in 1882-89 was county judge of Chautauqua conuty. In 1890 he became justice of the supreme curt of New York for the eighth district for the term ending in 1917.
