In the right fore- ground is a thatched inn, with a small and narrow flight of wooden steps leading up to it ; the inn is built on the ivy-clad walls of an older building. At the door stands the landlady with a child in her arms (though, according to Sm. 1 8, she sits on the steps with a child in her lap, while a man pumps water into a pail on the right).
