GRAMMAR O THE PANJABI LANGUAGE.
This language, as spoken in large towns, is a dialect of the Urdu or Ilindustani, and differs from it chiefly in having those vowels short that the latter has long, and in having the Sanskrit (:) visarg in the middle of words otherwise Hindustani; for example the number eighteen they call atthrn and not athira. In the villages the zemindars (farmers) speak a language called Jathky, the original language of the country. On the Sikh frontiers Panjbl slightly mixes with the neighbouring dialects, in Skawalpoor it partakes of Sindby. There are two characters in which the language is written; GLirmukhi the character of the Orauth, (gospels of 10 holy men,) and Lande used by the merchants in their accounts. The character used in the mountains of Jammu and Nadoun differs from the Lande of the capital, and the merchants even of different cities and districts, as Se6Jkot and Guzerat for instance differ slightly in their manner of writing this character.
The Sikhs under their preceptor Gurd G0vIND Sinou carried their hatred of the Muhainmadans to such an extent as to substitute a vocabulary for their native Punjlbi, because the latter was spoken by the Musalmans. The vocabulary is composed of ridiculous and disrespectfid epithets of every thing relating to Islamisin: it is not however used by MahrajIh RUNJaST Szsois the ruler of the Sikh nation. D
