bill on the subject, reported a bill to abolish imprisonment for debt; which was read the first time.

On motion of Mr. Martin, the bill was read a recond time by its title, and referred to the committee on the judiciary.

On motion of Mr. Doty, the Council proceeded to the consideration of the memorial to Congress, in relation to the admission of the Territory of Michigan into the Union as a state, reported by the committee on territorial affairs on the 27th ultimo.

Mr. Farnsworth moved to strike out all the memorial after the words, "the Legislative Council of the Territory of Michigan."

Mr. Martin moved to amend the motion by retaining the four first passages of the memorial, and striking out the remainder. The motion was lost.

The question recurred on the original motion of Mr. Farnsworth, and the motion was adopted.

Mr. Farnsworth then moved the following resolutions as a substitute for the memorial:

Resolved by the Legislative Council of the Territory of Michigan, That the delegate in Congress from this Territory be, and he is hereby requested to urge the enactment of a law by Congress, authorizing this Territory to form a constitution, and to be admitted into the Union, according to the prayer of a memorial adopted at the second session of the fifth Legislative Council.

Resolved, That the president of the Council transmit a copy of the foregoing resolution to the Hon. Lucius Lyon, delegate in Congress from this Territory.

On motion of Mr. Doty, the resolutions were laid on the table.

Mr. Durocher gave notice, that, on a future day, he should ask leave to introduce a bill amendatory of an act entitled "an act to provide for the assessment and collection of Territorial taxes."

The Council adjourned to Monday, 11 o’clock A. M.

Monday, February 10, 1834.

Mr. Stockton presented a petition from sundry inhabitants of the county of St. Clair, praying for the organization of a new township in said county, to be called China. Referred to the committee on territorial affairs.

Mr. Britain presented several petitions from sundry inhabitants of the western district of the territory, praying for the laying out and construction of a road from Mottville to the mouth of the river St. Joseph. Referred to the committee on internal improvement.

Mr. Britain presented a petition from sundiy inhabitants of the county of Cass, praying for the location of a road from Schoolcraft to intersect the Chicago turnpike at Edwardsburgh. Referred to the committee on internal improvement.
