LEGIS FLUVIUS ; or, the Fountain of the Law opened; show- ing the Manner, Method, and Forms of Proceedings and Pleas in all Actions and Li formations grounded on the Penal Statutes ; with Precedents. 12mo. London. 1685. LE GUIDON DE LA MER. Published by Cleirac, in Lts Us et Coutumes, etc., and by Pardessus, in the Collection de Lois Maritimes, etc. The author of this somewhat famous work is unknown. It was com- piled for the use of merchants at Rouen, about the year 155G, and is one of the earliest treatises upon insurance, bottomry, and average. It contains the fundamental doctrines upon these subjects as they prevail at the present day, and may be regarded as a supplement to the Roles d'Okron, though the former never acquired such authority out of France as the latter. The substance of Le Guidon was incorporated in the French ordinance of 1681. Cleirac's Commentary is much esteemed, but Pardessus' edition is, in several respects, to be preferred. 7 N. A. Sharswood. 2 vols. 8vo. Philadelphia. 1838. The author enters largely into the details of those heads embraced in his work, and shows considerable research and skill in collecting and arranging bis materials. Professor Whiteside says, " it is a much more practical book than Selwyn, and more useful for Circuit and Court, The style of the book is lighter than Selwyn's. It is more manageable at the moment, and is, I think, on the whole, a successful work." 1 Leg. Rep. 299 ; 20 A. J. 453 ; 15 L, O, 391. .
