Dá mb’ ḟáda é an lá ḃeiḋeaḋ an oíḋċe gairid.
If the day had been long the night would have been short.

The difference between dá mba and má ba is thismá ba takes the condition for granted as REALISED, dá mba takes the OPPOSITE for granted.

Má ’s duine uasal é.
If he is a gentleman (which I should think he is), &c.
Dá mba ḋuine uasal é.
If he were a gentleman (which he cannot be), &c.
Má ba ḋuine uasal é.
If he was a gentleman (as you say he was), &c.
Má tá deoċ agam ólfad é.
If I have a drink I shall drink it.
Dá mbeiḋeaḋ deoċ agam d’ olfainn é.
If I had a drink I would drink it.
Má tá sé agam ġeaḃair é.
If I have it you will get it.
Dá mbeiḋeaḋ sé agam ġeaḃṫá é.
If I had it you would get it.
Má ’s agamsa atá sé ġeaḃair é.
If I have it you will get it.
Dá mb’ agamsa ḃeiḋeaḋ sé ġeaḃṫá é.
If I had it you would get it.
Má ’s ag imṫeaċt atá sé dearfad leis fanṁaint.
If it is going he is, I shall bid him stay.
Dá mb’ ag imṫeaċt a ḃeiḋeaḋ sé dearfainn leis fanṁaint.
If he was going I would bid him stay.
