TWO FRIENDS I KNEW

Two men I knew—two friends, who sought a treasure:
One was a scholar, one pursued his pleasure.

Both found, or thought they found, that which they sought;
In neither instance was their treasure bought.

The scholar wore his gem in all men's sight,
Pleased it should glitter, glorying in its light.

The man of social pleasures kept his close,
And strictly guarded it within his house.

The scholar's wife shines on him night and day;
The other broke her bonds and fled away.
