ITEM pur ceqe monftre eft foventfoitz au Roi par Prelatz Dues Counts Barons et tout la com- munalte les grantz mefchiefs qe font advenuz as plufours du realme de ce qe les leyes cuftumes et eftatutz du dit realme ne font pas conuz commune- ment en mefme le realme par caufe qils font pledez monftrez et juggez en la lange Franceis qeft trop defconue en le dit realme iffint qe les gentz qe pie- dent ou font empledez en les courtz le Roi et les courtz dautres nont entendement ne coniffance de ce qeft dit pur eulx ne contre eulx par lour Ser- geantz"et autres pledours et qe refonablement les dites leyes et cuftumes ferront le plus toft apris et conuz et mieultz entenduz en la lange ufee en le dit realme et par tant chefcun du dit realme fe pur- roit mieultz governer fanz faire offenfe a la leye et le mieultz garder fauver et defendre fes heritages et poffeffions et en diverfes regions et paiis ou le Roi les nobles et autres du dit realme ont efte eft bon governement et plein droit fait a chefcun par caufe qe lour leyes et cuftumes font -apris et ufez en la lange du paiis le Roi defirant le bon governement et tranquillite de fon poeple et de oufter et efchure les maulx et mefchiefs qe font advenuz et purront avenir en cefte partie ad pur les caufes fufdites or- deigne et eftabli del affent avantdit qe toutes plees qe ferront a pleder en fes courtz queconqes devant f.s Juftices queconqes ou en fes autres places ou de- rant fes autres miniftres queconqes ou en les courtz et places des autres Seignurs qeconqes deinz le Realme foient pledez monftretz defenduz refpon- duz debatuz et juggez en la lange Engleife et qils foient entreez et enroullez en Latin et qe les leyes it cuftumes du dit Realme termes et procefles foi- IT E M, Becaufe it is often fhewed to the King by the Prelates, Dukes, Earls, Barons, and all the Commonalty, of the great Mifchiefs which have happened to divers of the Realm, becaufe the Laws, Cuftoms, and Statutes of this Realm be not com- monly * bolden and kept in the fame Realm, for that they be pleaded, fhewed, and judged in the French Tongue, which is much unknown in the faidp>.ea]m, fo that the People which do implead, or be implead- ed, in the King's Court, and in the Courts of other, have no Knowledge nor Underftanding of that which is faid for them or againft them by their Serjeants and other Pleaders; (2) and that reafonably the faid Laws and Cuftoms the rather fhall be perceived and known, and better underftood in the Tongue ufed in the faid Realm, and by fo much every Man of the faid Realm may the better govern himfelf with- out offending of the Law, and the better keep, fave,. and defend his Heritage and Poffeffions: (3) And' in divers Regions and Countries, where the King, the Nobles, and other of the faid Realm have been, good Governance and full Right is done to every Perfon, becaufe that their Laws and Cuftoms be learned and ufed in the Tongue of the Country :"' (4) The King, defiling the good Governance and' Tranquillity of his People, and to put out and ef- chew the Harms and Mifchiefs which do or may hap- pen in this Behalf by the Occafions aforefaid, hath ordained and ftablifhed by the Affent aforefaid, that; all Pleas which fhall be pleaded in any Courts what- foever, before any of his Juftices whatfoever, or in- his other Places, or before any of his other Minifters whatfoever, or in the Courts and Places of any other' Lords whatfoever within the Realm, fhall be pleaded, fhewed, defended, anfwered, debated, and judged in - the Englijh Tongue, and that they be entered and in- rolled in Latin ; (5) and that the Laws and CuflomS' of the fame Realm, Terms, and Procc-fl'es, be hold- ' en Realbnswhy fri* Laws fhould be pleaded and known in the Engliih Tongue.
