CAP. X. An Act for eftablifhing an Additional Revenue upon his Majefty, his Heirs and SuccefTorSj for the better Support of his and their Crown and Dignity. Every Fire- Hearth and Stove charged with the yearly payment of 2 s. to the King, his Heirs and Suc- ceffors. How an Ac- count (hall be taken of all Fire- Hearths and Stoves, ORAS M U C H as nothing conduceth more to the peace and profperity of a Nation, and the protection of every fingle Perion therein, than that the publick Revenue thereof may be in fome meafure proportioned to the publick Charges and Expences,' We therefore your Majefties moil Loyal and Obedient Subjects, the Commons affembled in Parliament, having duly confidereo the Pre- mises, do give and grant unto your mod excellent Majefty, your Heirs and Succeffors, the Rates and Duties herein after-mentioned, and do molt humbly befeech your Majefty, that it may be enact- ed, And be it enacted by the Kings moft excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and the Commons in Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That from and after the five and twentieth day of March, in the year. of our Lord God, One thoufand fix hundred fixty and two, every Dwelling, and other Houfe and Edifice, and all Lodgings. and and Chambers in the Inns of Court, Inns of Chancery, Colleges, and'other Societies that are, or here- after (hall be erected within the Kingdom of England, Dominion of IVales, and Town of Berwick upon Tiveed (other than fuch as in this Act are hereafter excepted and declared) fhall be chargeable, and by this prefent Act be and are charged, with the Annual Payment to the Kings Majefty, his Heirs and Succeffors, for every Fire-Hearth and Stove within every fuch Houfe, Edifice, Chambers and Lodging, as aforefaid, the fum of Two (hillings by the year, to be paid yearly, and every year at the Fealt of Saint Michael the Archangel, ano the Feaft of the Annunciation of the Bleffed Virgin Saint Mary, by even and equal portions ; the Firft payment thereof to be paid upon the Feaft-day of Saini Michael the Archangel, which fhall be in the year of our Lord, One thoufand fix hundred fixty and two. ' II. And to the intent that a juft Account may be had and taken of all the faid Hearths and ' Stoves by this Act intended to be charged,' Be it enacted by the Authority aforefaid. That every Owner, or Occupier of every fuch Houfe, Edifice, Lodgings and. Chambers, (hall respectively within fix days after Notice given unto him or them, by the refpective Conftables, Headboroughs, Tything-men, or other fuch Officers, within whofe Precinct the (aid Houfe, Edifice, Chambers or Lodging fhall be, or by the refpective Treafurers or Officers of Inns of Court, Inns of Chancery, or other Officers of the re- fpective Colleges, and other Societies aforefaid, wherein any fuch Lodgings and Chambers fhall be, de- liver unto the faid Conftables, Headboroughs, Tything-men, or other fuch Officers, as aforefaid reflec- tively, a true and jure Account in Writing under the Hands of fuch Owners or Occupiers as aforefaid, of all the faid Hearths and Stoves which are within their feveral and refpective Houfes, Lodgings and Chambers aforefaid. III. And be enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That the refpective Conftables, Headboroughs, Tyth- the fame (hail be jng-men, or other fuch Officers, within whofe limits any fuch Houfe or Edifice charged by this Act, as delivered m. a f w refaid, are, and the refpective Treafurers, and other Officers of the refpective Inns of Court, Inns of Chancery, Colleges and other Societies aforelaid, ihall by the laft day of May, One thoufand fix hun- dred fixty and two, require the feveral Occupiers of every fuch Houfe, Edifice, Lodging and Cham- ber aforefaid, to deliver in to them refpectively, Accounts in Writing as aforefaid, under their feveral and refpective Hands, of all fuch Hearths and Stoves, as aforefaid, as (hall be within their refpethe Houfes, Edifices, Lodgings and Chambers ; and upon the Receit of the fame, or upon default of fuch Ac- count in Writing, or in cafe there be no Occupiers, then within fix days after notice in Writing fixt to the door requiring fuch Account to be made, the faid Conftables, or other Officers refpectively, as aforefaid, (hall enter into the faid refpective Houfes in the day-time, and compare fuch Accounts, and fee whether the fame be truly made, or not : And if no fuch Account be delivered, then fhall take Infor- mation by their own View, of the number of fuch Hearths and Stoves, upon pain that every Conftable, Treafurer, and other Officer aforefaid,- who lhall neglect to do the fame, (hall forfeit for every week he or they fhall fo neglect, the fum of Five pounds, and for every falie return wilfully made contiary to this Act, he or they fhall forfeit and lofe for every Hearth and Stove fo fallly returned or omitted, the fum of Forty (hillings. IV. And be it further enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That the feveral Conftables, and other Officers, who are hereby authorized to take the Account of the aforefaid Hearths and Stoves within their particular Limits, as aforefaid, fhall at the next Quarter Seifions after the faid laft day of May, to be holden for their refpective Counties, deliver all fuch Acounts in Writing, as they (hall receive, reform, or take by their own view, unto the juftices of Peace in their refpective Quarter SefTions of the Said Counties, together with a true Note of the Names of all fuch perfons, who lhall refufe or neglect to Kow and when
