Five Pounds y # And be it further enacted, That from and after the Four and twentieth Day of June, One thou- per n fonsdi?viL fand fix hundred ninety four, no perfon or perfons (hall prefume to Drive or Let to Hire by the Hour Coach without or Day, or otherwife, any Hackney Coach or Coach-Horfes, within the Cities ot London or Weftmin- Licence. j{ er ^ or Suburbs of the fame, or within the Parifhes or Places comprifed within the Bills of Mortality, nor (hall prefume to Drive or Let to Hire, as aforefaid, any Stage-Coach or Coach-Horfes, in any place within the Kingdom of England, Dominion of Wales, or Town of Berwick upon Tweed, without fuch Leave or Licence firft obtained from the faid Commiffioners, as aforefaid, according to the particular Provisions and Limitations of this Act, upon pain to forfeit for every fuch Offence the fum of Five Coach Horres to pounds; And that no Horfe, Gelding or Mare, to be ufed with any Hackney or Stage-Coaches, (hall HandsHieh be under the Size of Fourteen Hands high, according to the Standards : And that every Coach fo Li- cenced, (hall have a Mark of Diftinction by Figure or otherwife, as the faid Commiffioners (hall think Coaches to be fit; And the faid Mark (hall be placed on each fide of every fuch Coach, in the mod convenient man- Figured. ner tQ k e ta k en Notice of, to the end they may be known if any Complaint (hall be made of them, and that no perfon (hall be Licenfed to keep more than two Hackney-Coaches; which Coaches (hall have every one of them feveral Figures or Marks of Diftinction, in the fame manner as if they did be- long to feveral perfons; And that no perfon (hall put the fame Figure or Mark of Diftinction upon his Coach that is appointed for any other Coach, nor (hall Blot out, Obliterate, Alter or Deface the Figure or Mark of Diftinction appointed by the faid Commiffioners for his Coach, under the Forfeiture of Five pounds for every fuch Offence, one Moiety whereof (hall be to the Informer, and the other Moiety to Ancient Coach- the Ufe of their Majefties; And the faid Commiffioners for Licenfing and regulating of Coaches, are fiftt^fd be hereby required in the firft place to Licence all fuch perfons as have been Ancient Coachmen who have r icen e . f orrner ]y j^ Licences by Act of Parliament, or the Widow or Widows of any of them, unlefs they (hall neglect or refufe to take fuch Licences upon the refpective Terms hereby allowed, within a reafonable time to be limited by the faid Commiffioners, not lefs than Twenty days. Penalty upon VI. And be it further enacted, That if any Commiffioner fo appointed, (hall grant Licences for more L^Tnfin^Tbove tnan the Number of Seven hundred Hackney-Coaches, as before is directed, or (hall grant any Licence Seven hundred, for any Hackney-Coach or Stage-Coach, for any longer time than is herein before directed for Hackney- Coaches and Stage-Coaches refpectively, he (hall forfeit for every fuch Offence, One hundred pounds, to be profecuted and recovered by any perfon who will fue for the fame, by Action of Debt, Bill, Plaint or Information, in any of their Majefties Courts of Record at Wejiminjler, in which no Effoign, Protection, Wager of Law, Privilege, or more than one Imparlance (hall be granted or allowed. And be it further enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That no Hackney-Coachman fo Licenfed, ney-Coaches. n or the Driver of fuch Coach (hall prefume to take for his Hire in and about the Cities of London and Wefi?ninjler, or within Ten Miles thereof, above the Rate of Ten Shillings for a day, rekoning Twelve Hours to the Day, and by the Hour, not above Eighteen pence for the firft Hour, and Twelve pence for every Hour after; And that no Gentleman or other perfon (hall pay from any of the Inns of Court cv thereabouts, to any part of Saint James's or City of tVeJlminfler (except beyond Tuttle-Street) above Twelve pence, and the fame Prices from the fame Places to the Inns of Court or Places thereabouts, and from any of the faid Inns of Court or thereabouts, to the Royal Exchange, Twelve pence; and if to the Tower of London or to Bi/hop [gate-Street or Aldgate or thereabouts, Eighteen pence; and fo from the fame places to the faid Inns of Court, as aforefaid, and the like Rates from and to any place at the Penalty upon j;^ rjiftance with the places before mentioned. And if any Coachman (hall refufe to go at, or (hall exact more for his Hire than the feveral Rates hereby limited, he (hall for every fuch Offence forfeit the fum of Forty Shillings. Commiffioners VIII. And be it further enacted, That the faid Commiffioners may appoint fuch other Officer or Of- u a d aP o m - t ncers under them, as they (hall find neceffary for the Carrying on the faid Service, with fuch mode- whoTre totake rate allowances as. (hall be fit, and the faid Commiffioners and other Officers under them, and every of no Fee except them, are hereby required not to take or demand, directly or indirectly, of any perfon for their Licences, is. 6d. ior the anv f um f m oney or other Gratuity or Confideration whatfoever, over than what is herein directed to be paid to their Majefties, nor to take or demand any Fee or Reward from any perfon or perfons, for any thing by them to be done in Execution of their refpective Offices or Employments, other than from their Majefties, their Heirs and Succeffors, upon pain to forfeit for every fuch Offence their refpective Offices and Employments, and to be incapable of any new Grant thereof; Except only that it (hall be lawful for the Clerks for their pains in Writing and Ingrofling each Licence, to have and receive the fum of Two Shillings and fix pence, and no more. What Oath the jx. And be it further enacted, That the faid Commiffioners, and every of them and every Officer &°!"are to°tak<J! to he appointed under them, (hall, before Two or more of the faid Commiffioners, take an Oath for the Seff. 1. Cap. 8. due and faithful execution of their refpective Offices and Employments, and (hall likewife take the Oaths appointed by an Act of Parliament made in the firft year of their Majefties Reign, Entituled, An Ail for the Abrogating the Oaths of Supremacy and Allegiance, and Appointing other Oaths; which faid Oaths, the faid Commiffioners, or any Two of them, are hereby impowered to adminifter; And that no perfon nor perfons-
