By Robert Colvill, cousin and possibly h. male of tho above, being only s. and h. of John C. of Ely in the sd. co. of Fife, Wright {Imp. 12 Sep. 1691), yst (but not the next) br. to William C. the father of the la.st claimant. He not only called himself Lord Colvill of Ochiltree [S.] but tendered his vote as such, which was received at the elections of Scotch Rep. Peers, 8 May 1 784 and 28 March 1787. It was again tendered at the election of 10 Jan. 1 7SS, but was disallowed, it appearing from very sufficient evidence that Robert, the 2nd Lord, had no brother of the name of James, but that the James Colvill in Lochtoun of Kippo (ancestor of the claimant), alleged to be such br., was son of an Arthur Colvill at Mylnetown of PitmiUie.(») (III.) By a person calling himself Lord Colvill of Ochiltree, -who tendered his vote at the election of Scotch Rep. Peers in 1847, which was (not- withstanding a protest of the Karl of Selkirk) accepted ; when, however, on the following year, he tendered the same, the title of Colrille of Ochiltree was (under au nct( b ) passed in the interval) oixlcred not to be called, until the right thereto had been established. BARON COMBERMIiRK of Combermere, co, Chester, and, subsequently, on 8 Feb 1S27 was cr. VISCOUNT Viscnnntr-o- COMBERMERE OF BHURTPORE(°) in the East Indies and of y " Combermere in the County Palatine of Chester. He was 2nd but 1st I. 1827. surv. s. of Sir Robert Salusbury Corro'tf, 5th Bart., of Combermere afsd. by Frances, da. Mid coheir of James Russell Stapleton of Bod- dryddon, co. Denbigh, was ft. 14 Nov. 1773 at Llewenuy Hull, co. Denbigh ; ed. at Westtn. School, 1785-89 ; joined the army, 1790 ; becoming in 1791, at the age of 21, Lieut.-Col. of 25th Light Dragoons, with whom he served against Tippo Sahib at Malavelly and, in 1799, at the siege of Seringapatam ; Col. in the army and Lieut.-Col. of the 16th Light Dragoons, 1800 ; Major-Gen. 1805. Ha was M.P. for Newark, 1806- 14, and sue. liis father in the Baronetcy and family estates 24 Aug. 1S09. He was then in command of a Brigade in the Peninsular, and for his signal service at Talavera, 28 July 1809, received the thanks of Pari. Being in command of the 1st division of the Cavalry he covered the retreat (July to Sop. 1810) to Torres Vedras, and, as Com- mander of the whole of the allied Cavalry (1811-14) he led the famous charge of (») " Robertson" pp. 458-467. (*>) " By one of the provisions of the Act 10 and 11, Vic. (c 52) a vote protested against by two Peers must be reported by the Lord Clerk Register to the House of Lords, and if the person voting fail to appear or make good his right, the House is empowered to order the Peerage in question not to be called again till the Claimant or some one else has established his right to it.
