He was b. 10 Jan. 180S, and fur. tn the pttvage 25 Jan. 1 8:!6. Having m. 27 June 1837, at St. John's, Paddington, Mary Isabella, da. and h. of Richard John Tihhits, of Barton Seagravc Hall, co. Northampton, by Horatia Charlotte, da. of Thomas Lockwood (and Charlotte, da. of Lord George Manneus-Slttox), he, by royal lie, 12 Feb. 1840, took the name of Tibbitt after that of llnid. Had. S May 1846, at -11, Bryanston square, Marylebone, Will pr. June, 1S16. His widow m. 5 May, IS 19, at St. Geo. Han. scp, George Ham., of Portslade, 00. Sussex, M.D., who (/. at Eastbourne 10 Sep. I") " No family have had better fortune or more advancements in the navy than the Hoods. Samuel, Viscount Hood, hasbeeu as fortunate at land as at sea ; he has held at various times many lucrative and honourable situations, and has been loaded with honour as -we'll as places. In 1778 he was made a Baronet ; in 1788 an Irish Peer; in 1795 his wife was created an English Baroness, and in 1796 he was himself made an English Viscount." See Sir Kgnrton Brydges' " Biogr. Lord Hood's brother, Alexander Hood, obtained, likewise, for naval services three peerages, viz. an Irish Barony (Bridport), in 1794 (with a spec. rem. under which it still exists), besides a Barony [G.B.] in 1795, and a Viscountcy [G.B.] in 1800. The motto of the family, " Vintii fecund**/* seems a vary appropriate one. (<:) The probable cause of a Peerage [G.B.] being conferred on her, instead of her husband, was in order that he should not vacate his seat in the House of Commons. («) He was one of the trio of the establishment at Brandenburg douse, alluded to in the well-known lines. of Theodore Hook " Lord Hood, lor a man ; for a maid, Lady Anne, And Alderman Wood for a beau, Mam ; lo, Mam. His companions being Sir Matthew Wood, Hart, (so cr. 18:37), alderman, and twice Lord Mayor of Loudon, and Lady Anne Hamilton, who d. unin., 10 Oct. 1816, aged 80.
