GLAMORGAN. 25 Karl 'if Glamorgan aud Harm, Beaufort, and in a Hoy a I warrant of 1661, under the s-t^n manual of Charles It., the Sing, after reciting a descent of John (Granville), Birl ill Ktttb, from Hubert Kitzhamon, Lnrd of Gloucester and Glamorgan.^) declares that i:i case the Earldom fit' Glamorgan shall fall to tile Crown during his rei.m for want of heirs male of the then Marquess, by Ins la ly then living, " as we are informed the same is settled by oar Royal father, "( b ! he would not again confer the KarMom on any ether family, lint would restore it to that of Granville, by the creation of the theu Earl of Bath as Karl of Glamorgan. The Marquess d. 3 April 1667. aud attributed to him amongst his other titles ; John, Karl of Bath, never received any grant of the promised Earldom of Glamorgan, which dignity is found on several of the Garter plates of the Marquess's descendants down to the year 1801, as mentioned below. See fuller account of this nobleman himself, under" Worcester" Marqnessate, cr. 1612, Kith the second Marquess. It is difficult to pronounce what, since the death of the grantee, can. with any authority, be said to have lieOute of the B'trldom of Gtamoraan an 1 the Baron a of Iferte' t of Ua/decote, and one is utmost incline 1 to accept their existence only so far as recognised by Charles II., viz, as having been granted with a spec, rem- to the grantees issue ley his second wife. In that case, no such issue existing, they would become extinct in 1667 < This view is borne out by their uot being again heard of till about 50 years subsequently. Certain it is that the 3rd Marquess (who was fir Duke uf Beaufort in D^c. 1682), the s. anil h. of the grantee (by his first wife), never assumed these titles, aud they are not among those recorded on his Garter plate of 1672. ( c ) Of his two elder sons (each of whom was successively his heir a]).) the eldest, Henry, was sti/led Lord Herbert (not, be it observed, Karl of Glamorgan) (t. an infant and v.p. ; and the second (but 1st surv.) s., Charles, also ttylei Lord Herbert, in. (under that designation) in May 1682, and a'so d. v.p. Henry, the 2d Duke. sue. his grandfather, the 1st Duke in 1700. aud to him the Earldom and Barony in question were (for the first time since the death of his great grandfather ( the grantee) allowed on his Garter plate of I713.(°) This allowance was not only followed, but actually increased in 1801 by that of the Viscountcij of Grnsmont,'^) which together the said Earldom and Barony were similarly allowed to the 5th Duke, all three titles being (naturally enough) similarly allowed, 4 years afterwards by the same Garter King, to the 6th (») This royal warrant is givcu in full in " Coll. Top. ct Gen.," vol vii, p. 193. ( b ) Courthope says that "This was an erroneous recital of the limitations of the Patent," but quera what patent or even royal warrant is meant? The text in "Courthope" as to this creation is [but query on what authority ?] as follows: " Edward SOMRKSRT, is generally considered to have been created Karl of Glamorgan, and Baron Beaufort of Caldeeot Castle, 1 April 1614 ; for the creation of which dignity there is now remaining in the Signet Office a Hill under the Royal Sign Manual, in order to his being ci: Karl of Glamorgan, Sc., ' to him aud his heirs male on the body of Lady Margaret, his wife, now begotten, and for default of such issue to the heirs male of his body, and for default of such issue to [his father], the Marquess of Worcester, and the heirs male of his body ; ' great doubt exists, however, whether any patent passed the Great Seal." ( c ) The inscriptions on the several Garter plates of the family are as under :- "Henry, Marqnis and Earl of Worcester, Baron Herbert, Seigneur of Ragland, Chepstow, and Gower ; installed 8 June 1672." '• Henry, Duke of Beaufort, Marquis aud Earl of Worcester, Karl of Glamorgan, Baron Herbert of Chepstow, Ragland, and Gower, aud Ii iron Beaufort of Caldccotc Vastlc. Installed at Windsor 4 Aug. 1713." •' Henry Duke of Beaufort, Marquis and Earl of Worcester, Eail of Glamorgan, Ciscount Grosmmit, Baron Herbert of Chepstow, Ragland and Gower, and liaron Beaufort of Caldeeot. Installed 2!) May U01." ('•) " Upon what ground Garter Anstis introduced the titles of Earl of Glamorgan and Baron Beaufort in 1713, when he did not Had them upon the plate of the 2d Marquis of Worcester in 1 672, does not appear, but the insertion of the dignity of Viscount Grosmond by Garter Heard in 1801 and ISO ) would seem clearly to have arisen from inadvertence." See Sir C. Young's article in the Coll. Top. ct Gen., as on p. 24, note " a." In Segar's " Ilonoret Anylicani " (Svo, 1712, p. 71) it is stated that Edward Somerset was sr., 21 Car. I. [27 March 1645 to 2d March 1646], " Viscount Grosmont aud CaUecoteia Wales and Earl of Glamorgan."
