Eerdi nando (Stanley), Earl of Derby [1485] to Lord Strange dk Knockin [1299] and Lord Stanley [1456], 1594. and h. ; 4. 1559 ". was sum. v.p. in his father's Barony as Lord Strange, He d. s.p.m. 16 April 1594, when the Earl- dom of Derby passed to his br. aud h. male, but the Baronies of Strange and Stanley fell into abeyance between bis daughters and coheirs, among whose issue they still so continue. ( c ) ( a ) " It has been considered doubtful whether the Thomas Stanley who was sum. to Pari, ou 15 Jan. [1455/6] 34 Hen. VI., was the father of Thomas Stanley, who was sum. in subsequent years, and who was created Earl of Derby in 1485. Dugdale states, that Thomas Stanley, Lord Chamberlain, the father, died in [1458/9] 37 Henry VI. ; and though he speaks minutely of the situations he filled, he takes no notice of his ever having been sum. to Pari. ; but, on the other band, he considers the first Writ of Summons w hich was issued to Thomas the son, to have been tested 24 May (1 Edw. IV.) 1461. Collins expressly states, that it was Thomas, the father, who was sum. in 34 Heu. VI., but other writers consider that it was the son who was sum. in that year. A reference to the Rolls of Parliament, however, tends to prove that it was Thomas the father who was sum. to Pari, in 34 Hen. VI., for it appears that in some proceedings in Pari, relative to the Royal Household, 10 July (33 Hen. VI.) 1455, he is styled ' Thomas Stanley, Miles et officiarii [Qy. ollieiarius] dieti Hospitii,' whilst in the Act of Resumption, in Pari. 17 Nov. (34 Hen. VI.) 1455, he is called 1 Thomas Stanley, Knight, Lorde Stanley, our Uhamberleyn,' though this occurred about two months before the date of the first Writ, which is recorded to have been issued to a Thomas Stanley. Moreover, on 22 March 1460, William Stanley, son of Sir Thomas Stanley the Chamberlain, is described as 'William Stanley, son of Thomas late Lord Stanley.' {Rot. Pari., Yol. v., pp. 279, 3126 and 348) And in 1 Edw. VI. in the Act of Resumption, the following account of the pedigree of Stanley occurs, and which determines the point in question : — ' John Stanley, Knight, Besaiell of the said Lord Stanley, John Stanley, Knight, ayell of the said Lord Stanley, or to Thomas Stanley, Kniijht, late Lord Stanley, fader of the said now Lord Stanley ' (ibid p. 471).'
