Anglesey, was 6. 26 Nov. 1766, and bap. 1 Jan. 1767, at Alderley ; ed. at Brunswick, Turin, Neufchatel, and at Edinburgh Univ. ; F.R.S. and F.S.A. ; M.P. for Wootton-Baaset, 1790-96 ; sue. aa 7th Hart, (u dignity cr. 25 June ]660 on his father's death, 29 Nov. 1S07 ; was upwards of 20 years Chairman of the Quarter Sessions in Cheshire, and was cr. 9 May 1S39, BARON STANLEY OF ALDERLEY, co. Chester. He m. 11 Oct. 1796, at Eletching, co. Sussex, Maria Josepha,(c) 1st da. of John (Holroyd), 1st Earl of Sheffield [I.], by his first wife, Abigail, da. of Lewis Way. He d. 23 Oct. 1S50, at Alderley park, in his 84th year. Will pr. March 1851. His widow tl. 1 Nov. 1S63, at Holmwood, in her 93d year. II. 1850. 2. Ch., Oxford; B.A., 1825; M.P. for Hindoo, 1831 32 ; for North Cheshire, 1822-41 and 1S47-4S ; Under Sec. for Colonies, 1833-34, and for Home, July to Nov. 1834 ; Sec. to the Treasury. 1S35-41 ; P.O., 1841; Paymaster Gen., June to Sep 1841 ; Under Sec. for Foreign Affairs, 1846-52. He was cr. v.p., 12 May 1848, BARON EDDISBUKY OF WINNINOTON, co. Chester, but svc. to Die Barony of Stanley, abont two years later, 23 Oct. 1850. Vice Pres. of Board of 'Irade, &c, for a few weeks in Feb. 1852 and 1853-55 ; President of the Board of Trade, 1855-58; Postmaster Gen., 1860-66. He m. 7 Oct. 1826, at Florence, Henrietta Maria, 1st da. of Henry Augustus (Dillon-Lee), 13th Viscount Dillon of Costello-Oallen [I.], by Henrietta, da. of Dotuinick GeoSrev Browne. He d. 16 June 1869, aged 66, at 40 Dover street. Will pr. 19 Aug. 1S69, under i70,000. His widow, who was 6. 21 Dec. 1807, at Halifax, in Nova Scotia, d. of bronchitis in Dover street aa afsd , 16, and was Bin*. 20 Feb. 1895, at Alderley, aged 87.( u ) Will pr. at £'22.079 gross. (*) ThiB family descends from Sir John Stanley, of Weever, yr. br. of Thomas, 1st Earl of Derby. ( b ) His only br., Edward Stanlev, Bishop of Norwich, 1837-49, was father of Arthur Peurhyn Stanley, Dean of Westminster, 1864-81, well known for his literary and other talents. ( c ) She and the heirs male of her body are in rem. (failing issue male of her father) to the Barony of Sheflield of Roscommon [I.], cr. 20 Sep. 1783, with that Bpec. rem. (*) He, when a young man, paid a visit to Iceland to explore " file extraordinary natural curiosities" there, " accompanied by a staff of naturalists, draughtsmen, and men of science. He was a consistent Whig in politics, and, tho' he was but six years in Pari., a long and active career as a magistrate made him conspicuous among the Cheshire gentry.
