She, a few months after his death, was er. 19 June 1S02, BARONESS SANDYS OF OMBERSLEY, Worcester, with rem. of that dignity to her 2d, .'Id, -1th and 5th sons respectively, and with a final rem. to her eldest son, the 3d Marquess. She d. 1 Aug. 1S36, aged CI at Downshire house, Koehamptou, co. Surrey. Will pr. 1836. IV. 1S3G. 2. Arthur Moyses William (Hill), Baron Sandys of O.MBF.HSLF.Y, 2d son, but heir to this peerage ; b, in Hanover square, 10 Jan. and bap. 15 Feb. 1793, at St. Geo. Han. sq. ; entered the army, 1S10, serving in the Peninsular war, as also in France and in Flanders, and becoming finally, 1851, Lieut.-Qen. He was M.P. for co. Down, 1817-36 ; sue. to the peerage, 1 Aug. 1836 under the spec, rem. in its creation ; was Col. of the 7th Dragoon gaurds, 1853 ; Col. of the 2d Dragoons, 1858, He d. at Ombersley Court, 16 July, 1860, aged 68. V. 18G0. 5. Arthur Marcus Cecil (Hill, afterwards Sandys), Baiion Sandys of Ombkhsley, next younger br. but heir to the peerage ; I. 28 Jan. 1 70S in Hanover square and hap at St. Geo. Han. sq. ; ed. at Edinburgh Univ.; attache to the Embassy at Madrid, 1S16 ; "precis writer" in the foreign office, 1822 ; Sec. of leg. at r loreucc, 1824 ; at Lisbon and at Rio Janeiro, 1825, in which year he was made Knight of the Portuguese order of the Tower and Sword ; Sec. to Embassy at St. Petersburg, 1S27. He was M.P. for Newry, 1S32-35 and for Evesham, 1S3S-52 ; Comptroller of the Household, June to Sep. 1841 and 1846-47 ; Treasurer of the Household, 1S47-52. He sue. to the peerage 16 July 1S60, under the spec. rem. in its creation, and by royal lie, 11 Feb. 1S61, took the name of Sandys in lieu of that of Bill. He m. 12 April 1S37, Louisa, yst. da. of Joseph Blake, of Gloucester Place. He d. at 2 Chesham street, 10 April 1S63, aged 65. His widow d. there 6 April 1S86, and was bur. in Brompton Cemetery. Will pr. 3 June 1886 above £15,000. VI. 1863. J f . Family Estates. — These, in 1SS3, consisted of 2,5S5 acres in Worcestershire, worth £6,668 a year. Principal Residence. Ombersley Court, near Droitivieh, co. Worcester. SANDYS DE VYNE. Barony by jp. Sir William Sandys, of the Vinef*) in the parish Writ- of Sherborne St. John, Hants, s. ami h. of Sir William Sandys, of I. 1523 Andover, in that county (d. 1497) by Elizabeth, da. of Sir John or ' Cheney, of Shurland, distinguished himself in the wars in Flanders 1 HOQ M early as 1 192; was (1 197) at the defeat of the Cornish rebels at Blaek- 1 ■ heath, and took a leading part iu the wars with France. He was one of the Commissioners to prepare the interview of Henry VI If. with the King of France; el. K.G. 21 April and inst. 16 May 1518 ; was Treasurer of Calais, 1523, and appears to have beeu " advanced to the degree of a Baron of the realm, 27 April 1523 at the King's royal palace of Bridewell.' Ho "new built" the mauor house there [Dugdale, quoting Lcland]. (') Dugdale ; who adds that he bore that title the same year when he accompanied toe Duke of Suffolk into France. Courthope, in his MS. additions to his work, says that the creation was " referred by the House of Lords, 4 May 1660, to the writ of [1529] 21 Hen. VIII, but no doubt the creation was, as above, iu 1523. The general writ for that year was 15 April (i.e. twelve days before the creation) and no special summons were then kept.
